I got a friend who is not a HAM, but has great interest in listening to the local emergency traffic here. He is freshly married (read low funds) and is looking for a cheap/old scanner to monitor basic analog traffic in the ~150Mhz range. No worries about digital or anything fancy because he doesn't have much money and is not that serious into it.

I found him a cheap Uniden off craigslist, but it sold. I see there is a Radio Shack Pro-51 in the EE for quite cheap. Would that get the job done for him? Old I know, but as long as it still works.

Thanks

That should work fine, and there are some keyboard mods for it here
A better antenna (other than the rubber duck) will go a long way to improve reception.

If you've got any questions, let me know

I've had that scanner for over 10 years. Just don't use it anymore because i can scan with my ham rigs if i need or want.

If you want to shoot me an email address, i can send you a .pdf manual.
