I received a used radio that came with the mounting bracket, but no screws.  Are the screws that fit into the sides of the radios standardized?  If so, what's the size?  Can I just run to Home Depot and pick some up?

Reason I ask is I used to have a mobile scanner mounted in my truck and it had these nice screws with big thumb wheels.  Made installation and removal very easy.  Know where I can get these?  My google-fu must not be very good, b/c I couldn't locate online.  Thanks!

I would try Radio Smack if there is one close enough. The radios I have messed around with were a couple different sizes.
Is there any truck stops in your area? They may have something also.
What radio is it?

Truck stop or Rip Shack are good places to look. If you get some from hardware store , be sure that that are not too long. Most radios nowadays use metric mounting screws. Again I stress don't use too long of a screw.

Sounds like there's a good story that goes with that.

Thanks for the tips.  Going to try and head to the 'Shack today.

The radio is a Yaesu FT-1802M

I did some searching for you and found someone who used some 8x32 machine screws. I guess it might be a place to start.

All mounting screws I have seen are metric. Try some 5mm x 1.5 thread or the 6mm x 1.5 thread. Make sure they are not too long as they might run into components inside the rig. Have you a manual for the rig? If not, download one and look in there. Manuals usually have a parts list that may list the screw size.

The story about long screws––––––- I repair radios and have seen several destroyed because of screws too long and shorting out components on the board. And another story, I used to work in a hardware store in my younger days and will always remember the time a young female came in and asked me for a long screw. It took weeks for me to live that one down.

I used to work on radios also and the best one was when this guy brings hig radio in for repair and says "it worked until I installed it"  Found a piece of allthread ran completely through the radio. Better yet, he said he had to run a long drill bit through it to make the allthread go through!

In case anyone is wondering, I found this link 4mm Thumb Screws Cobra that is exactly what I'm looking for.

None of the truck stops closest to me, or hardware stores, or Napa had thumb screws.  Oh well, at least I know these are designed for radios.

Gotta love all of the very illegal kits that guy has listed to increase the output of CBs.
