Hello everyone. I am interested in getting into shortwave radio. I am currently looking at the cc radio am fm sw from c crane. I have a cc radio plus and it has worked well for me for many years. I plan on using an external anntana due to my metal roof. Would this be a good beginners radio. The cost is around 150.00. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks. Eric |

There are radios and there are radios.
Do you want to listen to the ham bands, or just SW broadcast? If you want to listen to the ham bands you will need a radio with Single Side Band (SSB) capability. SSB is not needed if you just want to listen to the international broadcast bands. Look up reviews on eHam.net http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/8 I enjoyed listening my Grundig S350DL and Icom R75. Other reviews can be found here http://www.radiointel.com/reviews.htm |

I researched for a couple weeks on a decent portable SW receiver. My conclusion as to the best unit under $200 was the Sony ICF-SW7600GR. It has been an outstanding radio so far. SSB on LSB and USB reception is very good. I can tune into all kinds of voice and CW transmissions at any time of the day. At night, I have DXed dozens of english broadcast stations, from as far away as Poland, Russia, and China. On that note, you can going to want the latest "Passport to World Band Radio."
The sony also has a synchrous detector circuit, which is very good at locking on to and isolating a station to reduce interference. |
