If I were to use a multi band horizontal wire antenna, which direction should I mount it?  N/S, or E/W?  Or does it matter?

southwest of Houston, TX if that matters.

If you stretch it out E/W, then you get to talk to Yankees* and Mexicans.

If you stretch it out N/S, then you get to talk to Floridians and Californians.

Seriously, unless a dipole is up at least half a wavelength, it is omnidirectional.

G9B - Basic antennas: Dipole
The low angle azimuthal radiation pattern of an ideal half-wavelength
dipole antenna installed 1/2 wavelength high and parallel to the earth is
a figure-eight at right angles to the antenna.
The antenna height affects the horizontal (azimuthal) radiation pattern of
a horizontal dipole HF antenna if the antenna is less than 1/2 wavelength
high and resulting the azimuthal pattern is almost omnidirectional.

yup, what he said. unless it's real close to the ground then you got yourself an onmi thats NVIS.
I have my 75 meter dipole up 30 feet on center and 10-12 feet on the ends. north and south. and it's a good omni.

I'm not really that smart, Mike, I copied that from a General exam study guide.

Hey, I'm going to pass some tests Saturday.  I'm doing some serious cramming.  My head is wrapped with duct tape to keep my head from exploding.

UPDATE!!!  I passed... all of them, yes, including the Extra!

I have two G5RV antenna's up. One is running N/S the other E/W so I get 360 degree coverage. However, 98% of my contacts including Europe, Africa, Austraila are on the N/S anteanna.
