Sup fellas. I'm still studying to take my exam (still have to get up with the local chapter to set it up) but i'm looking for a good beginner hand held. what's everyone's opinion on the icom ic-v8? it's in my price range and the size is good.

Good unit for the dough. I like Icom. Dependable stuff.

I've got one that I won at the club Christmas Party.  It is a pretty nice radio.  I used it a couple times before getting a dual bander.  I have thought about selling it.

It's a good radio but by the time you get a rechargeable battery and charger for it you'll be up to the price of a nicer radio IIRC.  You'll go broke buying AA batteries for it otherwise.

Just run your battery charger off your 12v backup, or car, etc etc.

As a strictly SHTF radio stashed in the BOB then that's a valid plan.

For a regular-use amateur radio you're going to have to have a rechargeable battery or you won't be able to afford to actually use it.

Any suggestions? I was looking at the same radio, but can spend up to $200 on a radio and accessories.

VX-170 for a 2m.  FT-60 for a dual band.
