i know you old hams have already done this. but i made oe today and it works pretty well on my HT and hopefully on my mobile when it gets there as well.

wire and components cost me about 40.00 <yes i could have bought a premade for that> but i have enough wire to build about 15-20 of these.

i made one for 2m. i am going to try a 70cm next week. the 2m antenna seems to do VERY well. i picked up an swr meter today but haven't tuned it properly yet.

About what's the maximum wattage for an antenna like this?

for a TV lead J-pole -- i would not put more than 50W into it, and just to be safe 25W should be the practical limit.

for a copper pipe J-pole -- no problem handling 100W or so.

go to the tacked HAM RADIO 101 thread,
ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=10&f=22&t=604477

scroll 3/4 of the way down the first page to "field expedient antennas for SHTF applications" and then scroll a bit farther down to "constructing a J-pole antenna for VHF/UHF"
therein you will find links to many J-pole antenna construction articles replete with pics.
