Hi all . Im getting ready for my Tech test and my first (and hopefully last) HT. I have read the Ham 101 thread and done some searches. Can you help me choose between some HTs Yaesu: FT-60R, VX-6R, and VX -7R I also plan on getting a FT 8800 soon. Which HT should get to have maximum performance between the HT and mobile? Like everyone else cost it a factor but Im only doing this once....for a while. I live in a very flat part of the country but want to keep my options open in the future to relocate.. ie SHTF . What do you recommend Thanks!!!! |

I don't see the 6 and 7 giving you any advantage over the 60 in regards to the 8800. The 8800 is a dual-band rig so the fact that they do 220 and 6M respectively is immaterial. If you're interested in the 8800 I started thinking last night of selling one of mine. I'm still on the fence but I might do it to buy a 857. I'm not using the dual Rx as much in the truck and I can keep my other one for emergency usage. |
this thread has EVERYTHING you need to know: ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=10&f=22&t=608348 ps: take the VX7R out of the running. IMHO you don't need 6m FM in an HT.
any of the three above will allow crossband repeat, and all support Yaesu's "ARTS". (link) ps: get both the HT sw and the FT8800 SW from www.g4hfq.co.uk/index.html the config files will be compatible back and forth, easing programming (actually "cloning") of the memories of the two radios. i do this with my VX6R and my FT8800; their respective memory maps are mirror images of each other, including the alpha tags and so on. ar-jedi |
I can already tell he is new to radio! Seriously though Best of luck to you I have no doubt you will do just fine. Its a tough one to fail. As to the radio I'd agree with ARJedi a 6m portable is not very useful. Save the bucks and put it towards a nicer mobile or base. -LTC- |
Let me know if you decide to sell !! |
