This I my first time posting in this forum.  I've had an interest in Amateur Radio for a long time--like a lot of guys, I think--but only recently started thinking seriously about getting into it. The fact that code is now pretty much optional has something to do with it, I guess, plus the agency I work for has me on The List as back-up for deployment in case of disaster, so...

Anyway, I've been reading the "Ham Radios »  Everything you wanted to know about ham radio but were too confused to ask" thread for several days now, and I'm all the way up to Page 23, which is evidently where this forum came from. Frankly, a 54 page thread is so long I'm still confused...

I am glad that ar-jedi broke his more informative posts there out into the Ham 101 thread, but there are still a lot of topics that could be covered in separate tacked threads--any plans? I.e., "Antennas", Mobile Rigs", "Ham Pr0n", and so forth.

Also, I notice that a lot of the links in the "Everything you wanted to know..." thread are now dead, and some of the information is obsolete; for example, on Page 20 there was this message from ar-jedi:

Nice, minty-fresh transmitter there.

When I followed the link I discovered that the PocketTracker is no longer available because "some of the parts are obsolete and substitutes are not available."
That post was made 11 months ago, and I certainly don't expect anyone to review all past posts he made in a tacked thread to make sure it is still valid, but if there were more reference-type tacked threads, it might be easier to keep them up-to-date.  Perhaps they should be tacked and locked, IM the Mod or whoever posted the info f you find an update.  (Or post a message and have the tacked-and-locked thread edited.)

Also, are there any plans to put a "Forum Resources" thing at the top of each page?

Byonics certainly didn't leave you stranded on that page you referenced above.

clicking
www.byonics.com/pockettracker/
leads to a page with

We are sorry to report that Pocket Tracker is no longer available. It was discontinued because some of its parts were obsoleted and replacements have not been found. This page remains for reference.

However, Byonics now carries a similar product, the Micro-Trak 300

clicking on Micro-Trak 300 brings you to a page showing Byonics current tracker products.

one of the links is the Micro-Trak 300.  the Micro-Trak 300 is, for all intents and purposes, the replacement for the PocketTracker.

If you are in Western Washington, check out the Microhams courses.  They are a good way to get your license, and learn a lot of good information.

What does any code requirement have to do with anything?

You could have gotten your Tech license... pretty much everyone starts out on 2m anyways...
