Well I got a Rapala light spinning rod and reel combo a few years ago.

I still use the rod-made in China- but the made in China reel became junk.

Same with the other made in China light spinning outfits I buy for trout fishing.

I swear rod companies make their rod and reels now so that you end up buying a new one every year or two.

Anybody else agree?

I need to fix my Penn ultralight reel

I'm suspicious of any rod and reel combo.  Usually they're not the highest quality items.

Fishing gear is just like any other gear. You get what you pay for.

Spend the money for a higher quality rods and reels and you'll get many years out of them.

Find one of the old Penn Reels if they're not very abused. I've got two of them. The 1st I bought back in 1977 and then I got my fathers a while back. They'll surely get handed down to my kids or grand kids if they show some interest in fishing. The old Mitchel 308's are another oldy but goody you might find at a flea market.

I caught a carp not quite as big as that on a lightweight rod and real. It was a blast. They put up a pretty good fight.
Nice fish by the way

We guess the fish to be about 30 lbs. The line was 6lb test. The hook was #8. Bait was a floating piece of bread. U should have seen it when he took the bait of the top floating.

Floating bred or floating anacharis is dynamite for grass carp

Just a little hard to keep on a single hook

I agree yankeesfan, you can't go wrong with an Ugly Stick, I have had no problem with my Gander Mountain poles either. I like to use a St. Croix Premier or Triumph in UL with an Okuma Alumina 10 or 15 reel. Great combo for panfish!!! My g/f uses a StCroix Triumph with a Quantum Kinetic and she loves it.
I like the Quantum Array 10 and 20 reels as well, good reel at a low price.

Hard to beat a old Falcon rod. I have some that have seen hell after 15 years of hard fishing and still working good. Had one re guided I love it so much, the guides were rusting from the ocean fishing.

I prefer Berkley rods and Shimano spinning reels.

You cant beat the $50.00 All Star rods at Academy.

Try the H2O Mettle reels they sell. Really good deal for an all metal bait caster, 10 bearing reel for $50.00.

Nice rod/reel for $100.00.

Buy quality once, take care of it and it will probably outlive you. Keep your reels out of the water and sand. Clean and oil them or have someone else maintain them at least every other year. More if you use the same reel year round. I have way more rods than reels. Rods are usual situation specific, while reels can be used for different situations especially if you have multiple spools. I love my Shimano reels. It think the Stradic is phenomenal for the money. I have a Browning Safari pack rod (1-6lb) that I take everywhere.  I used to have a Bass Pro pack rod but it broke when I got it snagged. I had 4 lb test on a 2-8 lb rod and it didn't take much to snap it. If you buy something because it's inexpensive, expect it not to last a long time.

The easiest way to tell a quality real is look for the letters SHIMANO on it.

I have a 5'0 Pfluger UL rod and reel (think the reel is made by Diawa maybe for Pflueger). I have beat this thing to hell river and stream fishing with inline spinner. spooled with 4 lb maxima ultra green I have had that thing bent pratically inhalf and it has held up (plus it holds up to being thrown in the back of my PU too, LOL). Plus is it nice and sensitive too. I got it for about 50 bucks at cabelas as a 'Combo"  several years ago.

They have worked great for us too.   The micro reels on a " I hate to say it " 2 piece rods.   The maroon ones.  Great for the crappie, and bass in small water to 15 ft.  So far so good.   I bass fish with their extreme line of  green  rods.   so far so good.

The price of gear has gone way up, glad I went on a binge 5 years ago.   My Abu baitcaters look  like   an Edsel,   but they keep going.
