David this another terrific story. Speaking from over 45 yrs. of personal experience as a type one diabetic, an insulin dependent diabetic has the odds stacked against them and time isn't on their side. The high blood sugars cause damage to the body and mind as do the low blood sugars. High blood sugars can cause diabetic ketone acidosis resulting in a coma, renal failure, neuropathy, heart attack & stroke not to mention retinopathy which can will lead to blindness. With high blood sugar there is an unquenchable thirst and that would make you want to drink from the nastiest water to get relief. It also causes fatigue and drowsiness The neuropathy in your feet to me feels like sever sunburn and also a stinging or being stuck by a thousand needles at the same time. Those nerves are working overtime it seems... If you stay busy it may not be as noticeable but not when you relx or try to rest or sleep.
Getting a scrape or cut can lead to an infection which without enough of the right antibiotics can quickly spread & lead to gangrene. Friend of mine's late husband had diabetes and injured his toe which cost him his foot and later the leg and then he killed himself shortly after that. The stench of the infection is terrible and when you lose hope its hard to want to go on. Keep up the great work. Your friend always, Alan A frin |
