| for years i have shot Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip in 30-06 Springfield 180gr or 150gr and i have loved it for target shooting it is expensive but it is high quality. i have got a elk with this ammo but it was a head shot at less than 100 yards so almost any round could have done that. so i guess the simple question is will this be a good round to use for elk or should i look for something better? |

For elk, I would go with an Accubond, Interbond, Barnes, Partition, etc. The ballistic silver tip/ballistic tip is a decent deer bullet, but I would run something a little tougher for elk. it just seems strange, i hear some people on the range agree with what you say. some people on the range say its a great round, and Winchesters web site actually recommends it for moose and brown bear. but out of the ones you recommended is it because of penetrating power or for expansion or what? |

Elk are big critters with big bones. If you hit a solid bone(shoulder) with that ballistic tip, it might not give you the penetration you need to get into the good stuff. In a perfect world, it would work just fine, but this world is far from perfect and I don't take any chances. Especially when it comes to making a quick, humane kill.
You don't need a 338 superwhizbang to kill an elk, but I would recommend a bonded bullet in any caliber. |
