I shot one today in a Ruger.  I loved the feel of it, but was told the ammo was very expensive for it.  Anyone here hunt with one and reload for it?  What kind of a bullet selection is available and how does it compare to the AR .458 Socom, .450Bushmaster ,.50 Beowulf type calibers?

Look into the 458 Lott which can shoot the WM and is what the WM should have been.

Those that you listed come nowhere near the power of the 458wm.

A Ruger #1 in 45/70 with psycho loads is in the 458wm power range.

Don't have a 458wm but do have a marlin in 45/70.

Don't know how it compares other than what you see in the reloaders manual and on the manufacturers websites.  BUT I can tell you that the 458 WM runs at or over $100 a box... very expensive to shoot!  Had one for a while but never got in to shooting it much.

I own both the Beowulf, a 458 Lott in a Ruger 77 Action, and a 45/70 Marlin. The WM is a great big bore, especially if you handload. Ammo is not that bad, as far as big bores are concerned. I use Hornady Dangerous Game series and pay around $75-80 per box of 20. So it is roughly twice the price of the Beowulf, however, it is also roughly twice the energy of a Beowulf, especially if you step up and shoot Lott shells in it. I find the recoil on the WM to be quite enjoyable and very manageable, however the Lott is a whole different story. For N.American game the 45/70 with hot loads is more than adequate, but the WM can be downloaded to duplicate the ballistics of the 45/70 factory loads.

tghe bullet will drive the cost to reload.  premium dangerous game bullets are expensive.  fmj and hard cast are less expensive.

The .458 Win Mag was supposed to mimic the .470 Nitro Express, which was the most popular double rifle cartridge for large dangerous game in Africa. It never did. Compared to the .470, it was a weak sister. So if you were going to Africa, I'd recommend a .416 Rem Mag or ,458 Lott.

The .458 Win Mag totally overshadows the cartridges that you mentioned and is total overkill for anything in North America except maybe American bison, for which it is well suited. Otherwise, for everthing including the largest bears, the .338 Win Mag is better balanced. But there is nothing wrong with using .458 Win Mag for all North American game, even white tails, if you want to.

For factory loaded ammunition bullet weights from 350-510 grain are available. I use the 510 grain soft point for most of my hunting, however, the lighter weight bullets (350's) have a flatter trajectory. If you handload the sky is the limit, with weights from 250-600 grain being available. There is a suitable load for every species of game animal in the world. Even in small critters it doesn't waste much meat, because it doesn't expand. I am by no means saying a 458 is the perfect one gun choice, but one can truly hunt the world.
