I'm almost embarassed to post this, but I need to.  I haven't been fishing since I was probably 8 (I'm 31 now).  Most of that was trout fishing.  As I got older my time on the water was spent water skiing, skin diving, oyster shucking, crabbing and sailing.  Anyway, I've been thinking about picking up the rod again.  I'd like to learn about bass fishing.  Will a trout pole work?  What gear is recommended?  Where can I learn more?

I realize this is the hunting board, but I didn't find fishing.

A trout pole should work just fine, the fish dont care what pole you are using. There is plenty of information out there on bass fishing, Large mouth, Small mouth, etc.

Here is a Washington Bass fishing site, that recommends lures to use for different seasons, etc.WA Bass Fishing.

For small mouth I use Rattle Traps, and small plastic grubs, minnows. for Large mouth I use Diving plugs,Rappalla, Bomber, Storm, Heddon, etc. Spinner baits, Plastic worms, plastic grubs, plastic crawfish, skirted jigs, etc. I use 6'-8' spinning rods with open bail reels, and for large mouth 8-12lb test line.

Most Bass will also take the occasional Trout lure, like spinners, and spoons. Good luck to you.

The most brainless way to catch bass is with a spinning reel and rod using a spinner bait.  Stress spinning reel NOT spincasting.

The safety pin type of spinner baits are very weedless and allow you to cast in and around all kinds of over and not get snagged.  The more you cast the more you learn.

I just came back from a trip and this is the primary rig my daughter used.  She caught bass, pike and very aggressive bluegill on the same spinner baits.  She fished from  12 inches of water to running over the top of 20 foot deep drop offs.  Rarely got snagged, never lost a bait and had a blast.

The same rod will cast plastics (jigs and worms) and if stiff enough will work surface baits too.  Crankbaits of all kinds, like post above.

The best way to catch a lot of fish in general is with a slip bobber and bait.  I use Thill slip bobbers on light weight rigs..
