I live in the city and had such problems with predators I built a larger enclosure and don't let them free range anymore. I PROMISE you you'll have possums, racoons, hawks and owls. I've shot 4 possums in my chickens and have seen foxes, hawks and owls kill them in my yard. |

The snow is melting and we are averaging 2 eggs per day. I think this spring we will get 2 more birds, not sure what breed. I would like an egg per day average. |

Very nice coop. We actually come out ahead, not by much but they do pay for thier feed, 7 dozen Thursday to last night. Should get another dozen tonight. Wife takes them to work $5 a pop so that's $35 bucks and 3 weeks of feed is about $50 plus scraps. Plus I like them

| Question: I have been letting the chickens roam around the backyard during the day. I need to apply a pellet weed and feed to the lawn. With rain in the forecast, how long should I keep the chickens in their run and away from the grass? |

Just looked at that, since that's a new question to me. If they have plenty of food available, of expect them to avoid anything truly poisonous. I'd keep them off until a good rain, or watering. Maybe toss the eggs for a few days if you want to be really cautious? The weed and feed my wife puts down disappears as soon as we water. |

| Chickens are easy once you are set up for them. We're getting ready to start our 3rd flock. Our last flock got whittled down from 12 to 6 from racoons, and chickens doing dumb stuff. We still get a couple eggs a day. Might get 10 or so this spring. Have to keep them separated until the pullets get big enough that the hens won't kill them, but other than that they are pretty low maintenance. |

Brooders: Does anyone have a sq.ft / chick rule of thumb? I have 50 Sasso male meat chicks on the way. I'd intended to make some nice plywood brooder boxes, but work and life got in the way. I'm looking at throwing together a brooder using a kids play pen and foam mats on the side and floor for insulation. Math shows it will be 1/2 sq.ft per chick. I plan to get them in to their pasture chicken tractor between 3 and 4 weeks, once they are funky feathered.  Also, thoughts on splitting the brooder down the middle and dividing the flock in half? My reason would be to make grabbing individual chicks for check-ups easier. Heat source: I'm going to try two Brinsea hover type radiant heaters, instead of heat lamps. Even though I always double secure my heat lamps, I'm paranoid about them. |

I don't think the Salatin style will hold up to our livestock and feral hogs, or wind I want to provide for all of my family and close friend's protein needs. Selling any surplus should defray some operating costs, but is not key. My cousin (ARF guy as well) and ranch hand are taking care of this tractor build. Next up will be a 100 bird eggmobile to expand my wife's layer flock. I'll be building it in a shop I just rented, off of a hay wagon. The 51 Sasso meat chicks arrived! Working on expanding the brooder now  |

Now ya done it! My meat birds need to move to their chicken tractor, but work has me traveling everywhere and I'm late getting it done  Big dog crate I got for hauling birds: It's 54x32x45 and heavy already I'm adding two more floors once I use it to move the young broilers. That will give me enough room to haul all 48 to the processor once grown.  Tractor is awaiting tenants  Waterer: I'm putting together the tractor water system now. The system will have two 10' sections of PVC, each with 12+ horizontal nipples. The tank is an old Igloo coffin cooler (35 gallons i think) that's been in my way for years. I'm plumbing out of the existing drain to gravity feed the waterer pipes. The plan is to rotate frozen milk jugs of water to provide cold water to the birds through the hottest days. The tractor is also getting two misting fans Edit: chicks are in their new digs

Been meaning to Still have all 48, and they look good I had plans to do weekly weigh-ins. Just haven't had the time I'll post some more this weekend The dog crate is no longer in there. I've got to get their nipple waterer set-up now that it is getting hot. Luckily they are in with some billygoats with a trough to fill the bucket drinkers easily. |

Well... shit Look at these happy free-ranging meat birds  Wait a second... nobody let them out this morning Uh-oh. Look closely. Shiny side down is always bad.  A micro-burst hit the ranch last night. A few hundred yards away trashcans and empty feed sacks didn't get blown around. This thing can't be budged with two guys lifting one end. No birds were hurt, but it crushed the four billygoats that were sheltering on the side of it. Killed two, and injured two others... probably will have to put them down. They were supposed to go to the sale last week If it had been sustained winds, the chickens would have been in the next county! |

Been following this thread when I've been on, and really enjoy seeing everyone's chicken setups! I can't fully answer this question because everybody has to make their own decisions about exposure like this, but I can add some understanding. Points to note: **Any chemical you put on any plant, gets processed by that plant. So anything you spray on the grass, gets processed by the grass, as well as the broadleaf (or other) weeds you're trying to kill. Weed N Feed is usually 2, 4-D and maybe something stronger as a kicker, and sometimes even includes crabgrass preventative. So yes, it's in the grass. It also may be in the top layers of the soil (the crabgrass preventative hangs out there.) **If I am renovating a lawn, and I spray 2,4-D on the lawn (I'm generally spraying stronger stuff than that, but sticking with the most likely Weed N Feed chemical) I cannot then reseed that lawn for 3-4 weeks, because that's how long it takes for the grass to process and break down the herbicide. So you can pretty much guarantee that your chickens are ingesting the chemical if they are running on that grass. The REQUIREMENT: Almost all chemicals say, "stay off grass until dry." That sounds so quick. So nice and safe doesn't it? I will tell you that I ask my customers to keep their animals off the grass at minimum overnight, and better, until the chemical is watered in and everything is dry again. But those pets are probably not eating the grass. Your chickens will be. As for me, I will not run any food producing animal on grass I treat. The area where my chickens are is fenced and that's where they stay because our predator pressure is so high. BUT...I'm planning for movable chicken tractors that will get rolled around the yard, and the chickens will get fresh forage daily. At that point, the entire back yard for me, would be left untreated. (Mine's not treated anyway because I'm studying herbalism and I make medicine out of the weeds.) All that to say, the more I've studied chems, the less I want to use them on my own tiny "homestead." (Calling my 1.5 acres a homestead is a stretch, but I'm trying to shift back to my upbringing and take baby steps toward growing more of my own food, so my mind is on this.) It's very difficult to not use any. I'll never be 100 percent chem free (I use them in my gravel driveway, for example.) **I cannot say whether the chemical makes it into the eggs. Logic says to me that it would, but a lot of money has gone into studies that you may or may not choose to trust. You might find some if you're willing to look them up and read through the dull stuff. YMMV of course and this is a personal decision. I hope this post is in some way helpful. |

Final update on my meat birds Sasso breed from Freedom Ranger hatchery. Kind of a hybridization of heritage breeds optimized for free ranging. 47 of 51 made it to slaughter 1. 2 died in the brooder 2. One was inexplicably eliminated by the flock in the coop 3. One somehow broke it's back. Maybe during coop (tractor) movement? Other than aome early cases of poopy butt, these were trouble free birds. No meds used or needed. No signs of aggression shown towards each other or during handling (other that the one bird getting killed off). Did fine in some humid 95* days. Average carcass yield of 4.4 lbs, slaughter at 11 weeks and change. I didn't get live bird weights. We roasted the first, smallest one yesterday. Flavor was good, but I let it get way too hot and it ended up tougher than I'd like. But not at all bad. Legs are about 50% longer than commercial birds, and my carnivore 7yo girl appreciated that. Breast size is smaller than a CC, but not at all disappointing.  My transport crate was a used 50×32 dog crate with two floors added, for a triple deck crate. Worked great! Not too deep to easily wrangle birds, but fit within a f150 short bed just fine. |

Mine is still in progress, there are quite a few small things I left as-is right now just to get them in there this past weekend and out of their temporary enclosure in our garage. I've got some of those concrete blocks buried around it but I think I'm going to dig a better trench around the perimeter of the coop & run, and just spread out bagged QuickCrete mix and water it in to prevent predators digging in. We both work at least partially from home, I have motion/floodlight cameras on both sides of the house that face the coop and we have a large dog. I know the birds will attract predators but we almost never see larger animals around here because of the lights and activity. Also need to finish trim around the roof, replace the trim on the right clean-out door (the one with the gap), finish painting the bottom under the coop and screen that in so they can access that portion of the ground as well, I'd like to install a gutter along the right end and set up a rain collection barrel for my wife's plants, and eventually (once I recover from this financially), run electric out to it and put a 2-4 outlet weatherproof box in the run for lighting and additional fans if necessary to combat the summer heat/humidity. The ghetto 255 AC I added to it was because of all the rain storms we've had the last 7-10 days. It's been massively humid outside and the air inside the box was suffocating me without the fan in it as I was putting in pine shavings and sand on the droppings board. Would like to make a longer ramp as well (or possibly build one that is L-shaped to allow me to bring a wheelbarrow inside the man door). I started building this thing on January 4th and finished it June 28th because of work, some medical issues earlier this year (took both time & money that I'd set aside for this project), etc. Never intended on doing most of the work on it during the summer, but at least it's livable now and my wife has stopped complaining that the house smells like a barn all the time. The goal is to make this thing as self-sufficient as possible so in the event both of us are gone for a few days, I can stock them up on food & water with a clean coop interior and only have to have someone stop by for 10 minutes or so to check them & collect any eggs.

Well, I have noticed a neighborhood cat hanging around lately. Some small rabbits live under our back shed, and this cat will climb over the fence and wait for the rabbits. I usually scare it off. The other week, I was drinking my coffee, and this cat was about 2' from my chickens, getting ready to pounce. I grabbed my pellet gun and took a shot, but missed. The cat didn't move. I adjusted for drop and shot, the cat jumped a foot or two in the air and ran off. I had just gotten that gun from my stepdad dad and it was not sighted in. I put a target out and shot some rounds, but it was inconsistent and inaccurate. He had another one that he gave me, and this puppy is very accurate but powerful. Fast forward to a few days ago, and the cat is back. It is sitting behind the fence with its head sticking out. I took a shot at the fence where his body would be, and the cat took off. The shot went through the fence (1/2" cedar) and blew out the other side. I figured the cat would not come back after that. This morning, he was back. Same spot, getting ready to pounce on the rabbits. I grabbed the gun and slid the door open, and he ran. I am pretty sure that if I hit him, it will not end well for him. I hate to kill someone's cat, but the little bastard has had a few warnings. And what's to say he won't get froggy and go after a chicken? |
