The Mint Moose Tracks we just stuck in freezer ziplock bags because the chocolate was still a little wet and botulism is a real concern if you don't have complete bone dry with the O2 absorbers. There are some things we are going to vacuum pack with mason jars and O2 absorbers. That really depends on how long of a storage is expected. If we are expecting to eat it relatively fast, it won't even get the O2 absorber. Which is better do freeze dry is really up to your plans for it. Raw works just as well, you just have to recall to cook it after rehydrating it. Freeze drying doesn't make it safe to consume, just removes the water from it. Our plan is to mostly do prepared food since the real goal is food storage. If SHTF, we aren't going to want to figure out how to cook the steak the freeze dried, we are just going to want to rehydrate it. That is a brand generalization though. I'm sure there are plenty to things we will just wash and freeze dry. Fruits and veggies being one example. |

So I am needing to try to fix my (VERY OLD) push mower. I was thinking about doing a thread to get help with it. Y'all have taught me so much about things I was trying to learn. *You taught me about trailers. I bought a trailer based on what y'all said, started mowing for money and towing a zero turn all over creation. *You taught me about welding. I bought a little welder and y'all even sent me some old welding clothes. I totally failed but it is still there, waiting to happen. It's one of my life goals. *You taught me about generators and about oil and about how two-cycle engines work as compared to four cycle (which I understood a lot more.) I can't even count the things I've posted a thread about, and y'all here in homestead have taught me what I needed to know to make the right purchases or carry out a task. Now I want to learn to fix my own small engines. Starting small. I was thinking about doing a thread as I try to fix my mower and run into stuff I don't understand, but I'm always uncertain about these things. Would anybody be interested in seeing this? Would others learn from it? (this is the point as much as my own learning. I can learn by myself through youtube to an extent, but maybe other people would want to know also?) It's okay to say no. Maybe most of you know this stuff. Maybe it would be boring. I ain't posting in Do it yourself (or at least that's not my first choice) cuz they tend to be meaner.  I have no investment but if I'm going to do it, if it could help somebody else, the effort to take pictures and post progress/questions might be worth it. What do y'all think? ~Kitties |

I have officially FIXT a pressure washer and a push mower! All by myself.  The pressure washer was brand new but had been left with its gas cap off and the tank was full of crap. It hadn't been started for about ten years but was kept inside and the crap wasn't run through the engine, so that wasn't too bad. The push mower was manufactured in 2008. It's the only mower uxb has ever liked. It set outside for the past ten years --part of that on a dealer lot while I waited for them to get to it, which they never did--so I was a lot more worried about that. It started and ran last week. My first ever small engine work. There's a bit of strut in my step at the moment.

It has been sitting unused for at least 6-7 years. Rebuilding it is on my short list of projects. I could use it to rework some beds at the house that desperately need it. All I've done to it so far is try to get the tires to hold air which has been unsuccessful so far, guess I'll have to take the tires off the rims to clean the seat or may just have new tires installed since those likely have dry rot. |

That's always been the problem. I get aggravated at the inevitable crap that comes up and goes wrong, because I'm on a tight deadline to get something done with the machine and I end up just wanting to kick it across the room. Taking my time allowed me to learn. I could cover it up and let it sit there til the Zon delivered whatever thing I needed, and when I got to it I could go back to it. I saw no reason the mower should not start but anything could have been wrong that I could not see--the coil, etc. I have a lot of broken things in my life and it feels good to make even a little forward motion toward fixing them myself, and gaining skill at the same time.

Now there is a little bit of bright yellow in it. It's brass shavings which means that worm gear is going, and now it glitches a little. I have to wonder if somebody smarter than me had a heavier oil in there to manage the age of the machine. So I will have a project here coming up at some point. I'm not far along enough to tackle that. And I don't have enough resources--like people who know the inside of the machine and can help me know what to do. I'm going to hit spots where common modern repair techniques aren't applicable since there is no Chinesium in this machine. Maybe we could do a thread? The hive mind of Arfcom I bet has some knowledge even about this. |

Knowing my dad, it probably has never had the gear oil changed. I'm sure that needs to happen. |
