Asking for someone else who is looking into getting one. They are looking at an Oregon 28-ton splitter with the Kohler engine. Any experience/thoughts on this one versus others?

I think he just likes this one because it appears to be built heavy and there's one at a dealer very nearby. Also likes that it sits up a little higher so you don't have to work hunched over.

Thanks

I bought a splitter at Farm and Fleet, sold it a year later, found a better way.
just cut wood and pile it, then rent a splitter 2 times a year. $30 a day, long day splitting, then I didn't have to store it or maintain it. or loan it out.
plus I didn't have a $1000 splitter I only used 2 times a year taking up space on my property

I personally don't think a splitter is absolutely needed at all. I've always split by hand and I'm happy to continue to help that way. But it's not going to happen and he won't be renting a splitter either. He's pretty well set on buying one.

The Speeco/Huskee version, now called Countyline I believe, at Tractor Supply is widely considered the best buy in log splitters, especially when it goes on sale for $899 or so.

22 tons, which has been more than enough for me in the +3 years I've owned mine.  I split about 5-8 cords per year and it's never failed to split anything, although it has grunted a couple times.

Of course, I had to modify mine:

Stihl shop by me sells more 28 ton Oregon splitters than any other, people seem to be quite happy with it.

buy something on CL, I have been looking from time to time good deals always pop up I just have been unlucky to have the good deals come when I have the funds.

as previous poster said yes they will sit most of the time but hey depending on your use it will be good buy. Id keep it covered keep the sun will destroy the rubber hoses which is expensive to replace all of them.

We bought a Dirty Hand Tools 28 ton with the commercial duty Kohler engine from Home Depot.  The 27 ton they stock does not have the commercial duty engine so we ordered it online ship-to-store.  The thing is a tank, starts easy and runs perfectly.  We had one problem with the actuator valve, so we called DHT and asked for warranty service.  They told us to bring it to the local tool place and it was fixed there with no questions asked.
