So my daughters and I made homemade strawberry ice cream on Wednesday (which was fucking awesome) and tonight I figured I would try and make butter using the leftover heavy cream. Its not that hard I remember doing it with a baby food jar as a kid myself.

I put the heavy cream in a plastic container with a lid and just a little salt. Then I proceeded to shake the ever living shit out of it. after a while I felt it turn into a whipped cream consistency with no liquid and about 5 minuets after that the liquid abruptly formed. I shook it for about another 10 minuets and then strained but I realized that the resulting product was still way too soft. Almost like firm whipping cream. I put it back in and shook it some more but it didn't really get any firmer.

I gave up after about 30 minuets of shaking with some breaks interleaved. Not sure if its salvageable since I already partially strained it. It didn't help that my wife was making hand job jokes the whole time lol.

Here is how I left it:

I do mine in the kitchen aid.

Pour in heavy cream.  Attach whisk.  Turn on medium speed.  Grab a beer and watch.  When solids form, turn off and drain/squeeze out the milk.

The first few times I tried I ended up with a similar mess. The key is to put less liquid in the jar than you'd think you should use and then really shake the poop out of it.

Kids with too much energy, or if you have a drunk you need to entertain and keep from anoying you, they shake it by hand.

If you have a spiffy kitchen aid or mixer or something with whisks have at it.

If you have a blender for turning ice into slush for drinks then the blender will beat the livin daylights out of that mess you have and probably create butter.

If you have more than one drunk to keep out of trouble use a heck of a tuperware container sealed with some duct tape and let em play football/dodgeball/tackle the fool with the container.

Sometimes the soft is what you get.   Put it in the fridge and spread it on toast.

That said, if you put the cream in a jar and use a gentle, regular rocking motion, you'll still get cream.   My mom used to set the jar on her lap and just rock it back and forth in a steady rhythm.  She'd sit down to watch Andy Griffith, and by the time the show was over, she had butter.  Use a nice Texas two-step song for the right rhythm.
