I got three laying hens from a guy who was forced to give them up do to his homeowners association. He said they laid on average 1 egg per day. I've had them for 8 days now and I've gotten a grand total of 2 eggs.  I'm feeding them the same food as he was, (plus tons of table scraps) and they have ten times more room to roam here and there are TONS of bugs for them to eat.

Why are these birds not laying? Is there going to be a transitional period after a move for them to settle in? Did I just so happen to catch them as they slow down for the winter? Are they not happy and thus not laying?

Any suggestions?

they could be stressed from the move, they could be molting, they could be older birds, do you have them under a light? they need at least 12 -14 hours of light for good egg production.

No light. They are supposed to be 12-13 months old.

I would bet it's the move. When we have moved hens in the past, it's been 1-2 weeks before egg production is back up. Our current hens have been slacking, but they are coming through a molt. I gave them the "soup talk" yesterday. I expect production to resume shortly.

Well if they are having to dodge skinnys all the time in Somalia to keep out of the pot I am not surprised at all.

The move stressed them.  I have seen it take up to month before hens are situated again to start laying.  Most take less but be prepared.

put them under a light and see if it helps.

You'll definitely need light this time of year.

I'm new to chickens.

I put a light out which comes on in their coop and on the side of the house at 0430.

They just fully matured and started laying about three weeks ago. Lots of eggs.

Also look around and make sure they aren't laying in weird locations.

Stressed.  Give it time.
