Had a willow tree taken down and the stump ground.  It seems to be growing back now faster than I can keep up with the lawn mower.  Is there something I can put on it that won't kill the surrounding grass?

Go to the hardware store get some copper sulfate, Root Be Gone.

It will be rough on the surrounding grass though.

I had this same problem and after the root killer didnt work I asked a friend and he told me to find the biggest exposed root and drill several large holes in it with a power drill and the fill the holes with an all purpose herbicide concentrate (non-diluted) and re-fill them once it soaked in.....worked great!... this also has proven very effective for killing stumps!

Drill some holes and apply household bleach.

This. I have done this and it worked although the stumps/roots I had to get rid of were smaller than what you are dealing with (I'm guessing)
