My nieghbor has a rabbit family under her shed and they are roaming about and eating everything. I declared a holy crusade against them last year and I thought I did fairly well, I was wrong. Since shooting them isn't always an option I have decided to trap them out, that's where you guys come in. I set up a live trap last night and I used (yes I know its cliche) carrots for bait because that was the best I could come up with after two martinis. What the hell kind of bait would they go for? I mean they live on clover and my garden so I have no idea what I could use to entice them into my trap. Help me out, please. ![]() |
| I never had any luck with this, but I've heard it works. You hide behind a bush and make a noise like a carrot. Supposed to bring them right to you. Another method is to put your pants on backwards. Then you walk right up to the rabbit and chuck him in a bucket. He thinks you're walking away and *boom*, it's too late. |

I caught two of them (about 2-1/2 to 3 weeks old) and brought them inside to cohabitate with the hedgehog for a while. Later, they went into a large borrowed cage in the garage. I fed them the finest organic foods and they thrived. They were offered a wide range of tasty veggies, but they lived up to the stereotype –– julienned carrot strips were by far their favorite. Whole carrots, not so much. They're South Texas cottontails, for what it's worth. When it started getting too hot in the garage, I released them, but I have to admit that I was more motivated by the fear of having hundreds of ping pong balls fall on my head. So the short answer is shredded carrots. There you go. |

From Havahart's website:
Suggested rabbit baits ◊ Brussel sprouts ◊ Carrots ◊ Lettuce ◊ Apples ◊ Spray the inside of the trap with apple cider Havahart |
| The 'lil buggers go coo-coo for alfalfa. In addition to shooting more than a few, I also used to raise rabbits and if you put a variety of anything in front of them, they will go for the young alfalfa first. If you have ever had alfalfa sprouts you'll see why, that stuff is tasty. Not sure where the whole "rabbits like carrots" thing comes from (probably Bugs Bunny) but every rabbit I've ever had will eat greens before they touch a carrot. |

Quoted:
Human hair does not work in the garden. Urine does not work in the garden. (both for rabbits or deer). dog urine does not work. I wish there was a snopes for this. Correct: both deer and rabbits are attracted to the salts in urine. I set in runs in tall grass. Kids trapped and shot a LOT of rabbits here last winter, and weare again covered up with them. Main garden is in chain link fence and it's full of rabbits. Small ones run right thru it! BEST bait ever is female rabbit! Caught one last winter in a box trap (kids used apple slices, but was set near our fruit trees) Caught 4 males next 4 nights, in same trap, same spot, with NO bait! |
