The heat has sped some things up for us and slowed some other things down.

Onions are early and we decided to pull them today. Probably could've kept them longer, but most were ready. I've had good luck with these Candy hybrids. They grow good solid onions that store fairly well. Pulling them this early may make storage a challenge. We'll have to see how that goes. I'll let them dry in the barn for a couple of weeks them maybe pack them in sawdust in the basement.

Nice.  How long do you think those will last you?

February would be nice but I'll settle for end of December.

So quick question. I just planted my first backyard garden recently. My father said it would be good to line the garden with onions to grow and they will keep out bugs. I noticed you didn't do this. Is this just an old wives tale?

Thank you

Early?

Mine were done at the end of May.

We've already eaten them all and are now back to buying them at the store.

You need to make a note somewhere reminding yourself to plant ten times as many onions next year!

I've never heard that onions keep out bugs but I do know a lot of folks who line the edges of their gardens with them. I always thought it was just because the edge was a convenient spot.

I plan to double, and triple some plantings next Spring/Summer.

You guys warned me that my first time garden was going to be unmanageable.

The drought and stink bugs took care of any manageability issues.

I still plan to put in a fall garden, but ... no measurable rainfall, and temps over 105 are gonna delay that for at least another two weeks.

This year I planted 600 onion sets.  I sliced about 3/4 of them on my Hobart slicer and then diced them and froze them.  The rest were either hung to dry in the garage or cleaned up and thrown in the meat tray of the garage refrigerator.  My Mom always told me not to let a July rain fall on my onions or they will rot. Another older gentleman stated the same thing this summer. This year they were pulled July 2nd and about 3 days later got rained on while drying on the covered patio.  After 2 weeks of being in the heat a few started to get bad.  I guess I pitched about a dozen.  I was kinda worried so that's why I froze so many of them.  Next year I plan to dehydrate a bunch of them.

I am always impressed with the size of your onion crop each year. I can never get mine to grow that big.

Thanks......my only "secret" is planting the Candy hybrids. They're the only onions I've had particular success with. Give 'em a try next year.

Nice looking onions.

Wish mine grew as big.  Most of mine are about golf ball size.

We got nice green tops on ours but not much underground.  I think our soil is too hard.

I've heard this before about onions and loose/tight soil.

It does not make sense to me.  Water can split granite, but it can't swell the soil around an onion?

Nice onions Feral. Experimented this year with trying from seed. Some success but too much time/work/effort. Everyone pretty much stick with Yellows and sets?
