School me on growing potatoes. Planted some last year and they did not produce anything, the plants (above ground) looked great, what am I doing wrong?
Could I see some pictures of your set ups? Thanks Fury. |
| We use the trench and mound method in the garden for potatoes and have had fairly decent results after learning to water them in well, place a little sulfur under the bed, and properly set an eye upward. The first year, we also goofed by adding grass clippings to the mound and the heat the plants. I've tried harvesting with a fork (stabbed too many in my opinion) and with a tractor mounted blade (but needed to go back and glean the row a bit by hand). In addition to using the garden, we are also experimenting with growing them in a raised bed that has sides that can be added upto about 18 inches tall (start at six, plant, and add sides and soil as you go)... using fresh cut lumber fromy our yard. I wasn;t too keen on using old tires but hear that they have good results so this was my alternate attempt and will see how it goes. |

So as the plants grow, you add soil?[/quote] Yes, you need to cover, or hill, the growing plant. Depending upon what reference you use, some start hilling at 6" of growth while others start at 12". The "tater" link in this thread has a good illustration for reference |
