Going to take advantage of the law enforcement sale at Cabelas buy purchasing a dutch oven and some accessories to go with it. My research so far leads me to believe a 12" dutch oven is the way to go as most recipes are for the 12". My research also leads me to believe that lodge logic is a decent brand, so I'm all set there. My problem / question is - should I get the 6qt with a depth of 3 3/4" or the 8 qt with a depth of 5"?

I have no first hand experience cooking with a dutch oven, any help will be greatly appreciated. |

Well you're looking at lodge. I'm glad of that because I don't trust the chinese ones not to have some toxic stuff in them! Inscrutable!
I have only the deep versions and do just fine with them. IIRC they recommend the standard height ones for biscuits and rolls so that you get a better browning action on top. I don't have lot of hours on my ovens and NO bread baking. I do have several pineapple upside down cakes to my credit though. Very fun to do with the kids in camp. Nothing like watching a 5 year old watch the dutch oven and remind me when it's time to turn again. That boy likes cake! Certainly can fill up a kids schedule while in camp with no TV or video games. Let me know what this LE sale is all about! I like discounts! |

I prefer to use the entire comforter instead of just the sheet, the density of the weave and the batting keep the smell in longer and allow you more time to hold her down if she tries to escape.
On the other hand I like the deep dutch ovens just because I can cook larger quantities of I have a lot of folks with me.

Either get the 8 quart or both, you'll eventually end up using both anyway. Good luck. Merlin |
