I'm considering putting a garden in my back yard, I'm not 100% sure but I'm considering it. So what would be the first step to planting a garden if I were to plant one?

Determine your soil characteristics.

Or build raise beds and pick your soil characteristics.

What do you mean by soil characteristics, and how exactly do I determine them?

Find a sunny spot. One that recieves direct sun for the entire day or most of it.
You are going to need access to water, so consider that.
Some people like to put the garden out on the periphery of their property.
I prefer it close to the house for convenience.

Buy Mel's SFG book for $12.00 on Amazon.
Start with two 4x4 raised beds, you can always build more.
You'll need a shovel/spade, a trowel and a small set of clippers.
Buy your sets or seeds, plant and water them.

Congratulations, you have a garden.
