My neighbor has this 12 ft. tall shrub in his front yard.  What is it?

The leaves look like this:

The bark is smooth:

The fruit looks like this and is on the tree right now:

The fruit has a smell of green vegetable and a taste similar to a pear/peach hybrid.

What is it?  What can I use it for?

Nothing swelled, nothing went numb, no pink elephants.

Now last week I was tasting plants in the parking lot at work and found one that made my lips go numb and the roof of my mouth itch.... I put that on my "do not eat" list.

Looks like some sort of lychee or dragonfruit. They are tasty and good for you.

I'm quite sure that's what it is. Check the site that i linked in my original post. I changed it to a wiki reference.

Well in the original link, the picture for the kousa showed a completely different tree.  Leaves were different, bark was different, etc.

Maybe it is, but the tree itself looks more like a cherry tree to me.

First picture wasn't very good for the species. Also, there are several varieties, but it is a Kousa dogwood. (Cornus kousa)

It's an Asian dogwood; I have one growing in the front yard.

Never been tempted to eat the fruit on it though.

If you are looking for another related plant to consider growing you might want to try Cornus mas
