These kind of documents make me very happy to have a garden. Link Acceptable food defects? How much filth is acceptable in your family's food? I'm perfectly OK with the fact that our food comes from the earth, and the earth ain't always the cleanest thing in the world. But I'm not sure I can groove on the notion of quantifying an acceptable level of "insect filth." Sure ain't what we're trying to do with our garden. Read away.....here's what our helpful brethren in .gov figure is OK for your family's table. Some excerpts: FOREIGN MATTER Includes objectionable matter such as sticks, stones, burlap bagging, cigarette butts, etc. Also includes the valueless parts of the raw plant material, such as stems. These kind of documents make me very happy to have a garden. Do you think the food you grow is really much cleaner? I expect that everyone who has a garden is like me...they wash their produce before starting to prepare it... So the answer is YES |

These kind of documents make me very happy to have a garden. Do you think the food you grow is really much cleaner? It actually is cleaner....not that I'm some sort of great horticulturist or anything....I just have the benefit of hand picking everything, inspecting each fruit/vegetable, and discarding what doesn't suit me. Commercial agriculture doesn't have that luxury....hence there's a bureaucrat somewhere setting acceptable limits for "insect parts" and "rodent filth." It's all very understandable. |
