This is a great first step. Just having the seed available is only 1/2 of the answer. You really need to perfect your skills year after year in order to grow your skills and soil to support a sustainable garden. I really stress for people not to buy pre-packaged kits for seeds. YOu get a mix of varieties, none of which may work for your area. Your choices are limited. There are many placed where you can order seeds. I'm not going to get into the Hybrid/Heirloom discussion here as I hope you can do your own research and make up your own mind what works best for you. If you have questions, post them. I'm sure you will get a boatload of answers. I can tell you, personally, that I use both and use them well. In any case, here are some of the places I've gotten seed from: **Links seem to be broken now, so you will have to cut/copy** Free: GardenWeb Seed Exchange http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/exseed - I've received PLENTY of seeds for little/no cost (SASE-Self addressed stamped envelope) Wintersown - SASE OFFER http://wintersown.org/wseo1/YourChoiceTomatoSASE.html - Tomato SASE - Pick the varieties you want and get them free. Cost: PineTree Gardens (Superseeds) http://www.superseeds.com/ Tatianas T-Base (Tomato Base) http://t-garden.homeip.net/mwiki/index.php/Main_Page - Great website for information on Tomato varieties - Also many/most for sale at small cost. Seeds of Change http://www.seedsofchange.com/default.asp Fedco http://www.fedcoseeds.com/seeds.htm Heirloom Seed CO http://www.heirloomseeds.com/main/index.html Victory Seed CO http://www.victoryseeds.com/catalog/index.html Bakers Creek (Rareseed CO) http://rareseeds.com/ Evergreen Seeds http://www.evergreenseeds.com/ R.H. Shumways https://www.rhshumway.com/ Value-Seeds http://www.valueseeds.com/ -Don't know much about them.. but costs are very low. Thats about all I can think of or find quickly in my bookmarks. Do some research on your agricultural zone. Order some caralogs. Read through the description and growing habbits. Talk with local farmers/farmers markets in your area. I'll get off my soapbox now. |
