We were shopping for houses and came across one we really liked (and ended up buying).  As a bonus, it has one entire section of the yard dedicated to a garden.  It's probably getting a little late in the season to plant more now, but I'm looking forwad to it next year...

Don't know if it's worth being concerned, but just remember that dog/cat feces can harbor disease/parasites and shouldn't be used for compost (whether intentional or not). Meaning don't let the dogs poop in the garden.

We have gotten a late start on our garden 2 years in a row, having been here barely that long in our new house. But we have still had a productive garden, just check times on seed packets for time to harvest.

We had good lucks with lettuce, beans, peas, tomato, carrots, zucchini and broccoli last year, and added some other things this year. Hopefully my peppers produce, and the other things do well.

Yeah I know...I need to fence it off with something so the dogs quit trampling my plants and getting muddy paws.

If you do nothing else this year, take the time to get in touch with your county extension office and find out where and how to get a soil analysis. It will pay off in the long run--it's hard to build your soil without knowing where you're starting from.

You have plenty of time. You might not be able to get good summer crops like okra and peanuts, but you can do alot.

Before you plant, go to a local horse farm and get some composted manure. Till a cubic yard or two in. The the manure is not fully composted, add a little nitrogen.

Plant now:
Zucchini
Tomatoes - If you can find mature plants, you might get some before the first frost.
Bush Beans
Carrots

September:
Peas
Broccoli
Lettuce
Cabbage

Another good book is encyclopedia of organic gardening.

Every SFer should be familiar with Square Foot Gardening... IMO.

Might want to protect your zucchini from the pups.  Our dogs ATE our zucchini plants.  Apparently the leaves are delicious.    We have since moved the plants into an area that the Invisible Fence covers.  No more paws in the garden!
