I plan to purchase seeds and store them for any future need. How is everyone storing them to keep them viable?

I've seen the #10 cans for sale that contain an assortment of seeds, but I would prefer to buy my own so that I can get what I want in the amounts that I want.

Can you put them in Mylar with an oxygen absorber? What about a Mason jar?

Thanks

Tom

I think seeds do not need much storage consideration except maybe keep in a cool dry place away from varmin.  My mom has some seeds that she brought over from China stored in a baby food jar that she uses regular to plant chinese vegetables. The seeds are >40 years old.

I have planted 5 yr old seeds that sprouted.  I test a couple in wet paper towels in a glass before planting. If they don't sprout I find other seeds.

Thanks for the info!

looks like no special attention is needed.

Other than keeping them cool and dry, no.  Heat will kill them.

Does anyone have a good source for the seeds that will produce plants with their own seeds (non-hybrids?)?  I'd like some for storage as well as a new garden.

Cool, dry and dark.

I have successfully started seeds that were >15 years old and stored under less than ideal conditions.

For survival, don't bet your life on it.

Google "Heirloom Seeds".
