Here's some recipes, courtesy of Hammons, the 800-pound gorilla of black walnuts. Mostly they're flavoring for desserts -- cakes, ice cream, etc. Some folks put them on salad. Eaten straight they're not very pleasant. BTW, you get about 10 cents a pound for collecting them and turning them in. Hardly worth the effort, but a family tradition for many folks around here. |
That is a great link for recipes. We have a black walnut tree in our front yard. Every year I collect a bunch for my dad and he never uses them. |
| Not sure how close you are to Ohio but there is a place there that will buy them from you. I think this year they are going for $3 a bushel straight off the ground. I you have to travel to far or dont get more than a few buckets full it wont even come close to being worth it. But if you have more than a few trees or access to them it can become a nice supplement to your toy fund. |
