I am looking into buying some long term storage foods. Either MRE's or perhaps Mountain House. My problem or question is can either of these be stored in a shed or barn. I have a lack of storage space in my house, but a large fairly well secured barn out back. Will the Texas heat destroy the food?

Yes, the Texas heat will shorten the storage life of these items.  Even the heat in a garage can shorten shelf-life during our hot summers.

Heat is a killer for stored foods.  You want to keep them as cool as you can without freezing, or store them inside the climate controlled area of your house until you plan to use them.

Try storing them under your bed or in the bottom of a closet.  Some kitchens have a lot of unused space over the kitchen cabinets.  Lower is better, but if all you have is a high space in a climate controlled area, then use it.

Do NOT store MREs or MH in your attic or an non-climate controlled shed/barn here in Texas.  They will only last about 1 summer, which is a large waste of $$ spent on long-term foods.

If you're interested in seeing what happens to some MRE components after so many months and at various high temps, check out a couple of pages I have here:

kar98k has it right - MREs won't last that long in heat like that!
