| I just read about boiling your jars/lids/rings to sterilize them before use. I did a little canning (about 6 small jars of tomatoes and about the same of banana peppers) I washed them throroughly and rinsed them well in HOT soapy water then immediately canned them. Will I have any adverse effects from not boiling everything? The food was boiling when I put it in the jars. Thanks |
maybe. if the lids don't suck down or pop back up you will know they are bad. hk |

The Ball's canning book I have says to just wash in hot soapy water, and rinse clean. Granted it is an older book, but if my grandparents didn't die from it.. I think you will be okay. I leave my jars in my canner while it heats up. When it is boiling, I take them out and fill my jars. I have to heat the water anyways, so it really doesn't matter to me. |

Think about it like this. Your not in a sterile environment when you can. Even if you boil them for an hour, as soon as you pull them out of the water they are contaminated. So long as you get the jars clean with no food or soap residue you should be OK. Also remember that you can reprocess or just put the stuff that doesn't seal in the refer and eat it in a normal time frame. But, like said above it's best to follow the instruction without any deviations. |
