Although I’ve eaten some MH recently, it’s actually been a while since I ate the chili mac. I didn’t realize the disparity in protein but now that I think of it it makes sense. |

I think flavored TVP works well as an extender, not a replacement. With the high prices of real FD beef and chicken, cutting a batch of taco meat with TVP can make a lot of sense. I've done it with plain ground beef, taco meat, and ground sausage. IIRC I let it partially rehydrate, drained off some of the liquid, and then dumped it in to simmer with the meat. |

I think your best bet is to mix it with real meat to stretch the real meat. TVP by itself mostly sucks. ETA looks like someone else already said the same thing, LOL |

Not really an update but kind of a funny. I made the Ready Hour cornbread for my staff at work, and they were gushing about the great flavor of my "home made" cornbread. Before someone says, "well, it's because they work for you", I had some other staff and a secretary wander through and try it, with the same reaction. Then I told them what it was, and without fail, "Really? No, you're kidding!"
Really. It's one of the things they make that really tastes good. |

hope you all had a nice holiday season................... well I finally tried MH biscuits and gravy with my breakfast.............. so it was 2 eggs fried, shredded taters and a couple of sausage patties with the MH sausage gravy smothering most of this open up the pouch and the dried mix looked as expected , took advice and emptied contents into a bowl boiled water and added 1 & 1/2 cups boiling water to pouch then poured mix back into pouch stirred up well , sealed pouch and waited the 5 minutes when i opened it up it looked like wall paper paste............but I stirred it again , sealed it up and gave it 4 more minutes found it was alot thicker.......................I believe this is to satisfy the hunger when eaten as the breakfast dish alone Me .................I like my sausage gravy a bit thinner so I added more boiling water but , the added water while it did thin it out a bit at first quickly got absorbed by the dried biscuit chunks anyways , it was bland , very bland it was good on my mound of food on the plate, but and even though I love sausage gravy , i wouldnt eat this particular meal all the time thanks for taking the time to read this |

picked up a MH chicken fried rice today................ what we are doing is trying a few of the menu items so that the wife and i can assemble SHTF buckets gonna use the kitty litter buckets to pack food, some sort of cook stove and fuel, mess kit water purifing system and some sort of emergency blanket into a space of the 5 gal bucket keep it in the car or in her case perhaps in the room at her work, as her car is almost only 30 paces away where her go-bag will be myself a bucket will be kept in my vehicle as i already carry a go-bag while at work |

Make sure you get the kitty litter out first...just sayin'... I popped open a can of Auguson Farms Black Bean Burger mix just four days ago. My wife said it seemed a bit blander than last time. So, I made a veggie burger to make a vegan cry - instead of water I used beef stock and topped it with bacon. Real dead pig bacon. Why? Why not? She loved it. |

I was asked by My Patriot Supply about reviewing the sausage crumbles. Hoo, boy, Ok. So, I told them the truth, and they offered a gift card for my disappointment, which i was NOT expecting, and told them wasn't necessary. It was very nice that they stood behind the product they sell, and I give them props for that indeed. I also used that card to order another can of the vegetarian taco "meat" - that stuff is really good.
I did remark that most people will never complain about survival food - they won't eat it until the flung feces hit the rotating oscillator and by that time...well, it's too late to complain. I'm just the weird guy trying this stuff during normal times. |

So I decided to revist the Santa Fe Beans and Rice, because I really like the flavor of that one. I did the 3/4 cup one, with 2/3 cup of boiling water and 2/3 cup of mix. Right away, it needs more water. I did end up putting in probably another 1/3 cup of water, and like I said about, I went 5 minutes longer. The rice was still a little chewy, but better. Attached File This was spontaneous and I was lacking some ingredients used before, so here we go, poor man's rolled tacos. Or something like that. Attached File Was good. Seriously, it was good, I enjoyed it. On the side - my shorts after two nights in Tijuana... Attached File My shorts after THREE nights in Tijuana... Attached File I know, I know...but seriously, that one mixed with the vegetarian taco "meat" is a real winner, especially cooked with a little more water for slightly longer. |

If it's glass jarred it'll last a long time and if it ever did come time to HAVE to use it, those seasonings will be worth their weight in gold. |

This is why I have reccomended getting The Blend multiple times, a simple seasoning blend of salt, pepper and garlic from Kinder's. If you've read any of my previous posts in this thread, you will see that. Ready Hour used to offer a freeze dried condiments, mustard, ketchup and something else, but that vanished before I could buy any. Salt, of course, is a rock, good forever. One of the things I always have are the bulk containers of regular old salt. As for MPS following me here, I have no idea, but they apparently liked the review I wrote for the SF B&R for the website. Nobody sponsors me for this stuff, got into it by accident, see post #1. |

armoredman thanks for keeping this going i have been looking at the sausage crumbles but did nothing other than that and well, you took care of making my mind up for me i really appreciate the input not only by you but others who take the time to post knowledge all adds up i been lazy on this stuff other than trying to put together some homemade mre type paks for me and the better half from not only individual mre components but single serve grocery store items as well probably as summer turns to fall i will pursue some more of the dehydrated foods again |

And I am having the damndest time keeping that glass stove top clean...but I would never go back to open burners again, unless I finally get a gas rig! https://i.imgur.com/IKec6ag.jpg Plated - the white stain is a stain on the plastic, nothing else. https://i.imgur.com/xbZWZD1.jpg Long and short of it - this stuff is absolutely tasteless. I couldn't detect a single hint of sausage anywhere. All it added to the meal was texture. I tried some chunks on their own as well. It might be good to add protein to a survival meal in times of shortage, but I wouldn't expect much from it. Maybe it would go good with the Travelers Stew, since it has no taste, either. 2 out of 10. Meats get their flavor from the fats, remove it because it goes rancid long term [without salt curing or similar methods] like what you do with freeze drying and the flavor disappears, especially if it's lightly/poorly seasoned. There is a reason the most flavorful cuts of meat tend to be fatty. [and more expensive even though you get less actual muscle tissue] Hence my suggestion of stocking lots of seasonings and spices. |

Not that I remember, no. I think the point to remember is 99 of these emergency foods are really never supposed to be eaten, but stored until "The Day", and THEN you discover what tastes good and what doesn't and by that time, you're hungry enough to eat a dead cat, so anything nutritious tastes good. I just decided to break the rules. Next is to combine these with the oven...I did mention i got the oven, too, right? Attached File |

I don't remember if I posted about these, but on a very recent trip I decided to snack on these. Yes, I was out of snacks. Attached File Short story, the little cookies have a decent but mild flavor. Also, grab one of those 2 dollar Walmart knives and tape it to the package, as the shrink wrap on the individual cookies will NOT come off easily. The cookies crumble very easily, so try to tear that shrink wrap and you have a palmful of crumbs. But they are right, it doesn't really make you thirsty either. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program... |

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program... Those look very much like the Daltrex lifeboat rations. Those are pretty decent in taste but very dry and crumbly. Looking on Amazon, I can see a number of other 3rd-party rations that look just like that. I guess there's only so many ways to do it, or Daltrex is providing for private labels. For snacking I much prefer the Mainstay lifeboat rations. Lemon flavor is great and they stay together better in their cube shape. |

I now live in the southermost northern state. Thanks demomarxists....
| I did only eat two of them over an hour, felt full, it did its job. I've had some other variations on the theme before, and one thing I can say is avoid the NRG-5, as they taste like moldy chalk. You would HAVE to be starving to eat those! These Ready Hour versions are pleasant, nothing fancy, but at least you don't dread eating them. |

Nice write up, I keep a variety of brands in my preps, from pouches to #10 cans, I do not buy Readywise (rebranded Wise) as their portions are small and mostly sugar for calorie count. One thing that most forget to add to their supply is some spices to add flavor to an otherwise bland offering. I keep small containers of Lawrey's seasoned salt, pepper and garlic powder, add a bit and even the escalloped potato with ham MRE is not bad at all. |
