Probably two 2200mAh IMR cells in parallel.

If you can replace them easily, say if it's not a proprietary pack, then sure.  Even if they're tabbed, you can find those, but if you can't, than you're just renting for a couple of years.

I agree. I'll never buy another rechargeable light with a permanent battery.

Yep.  My GF moved into a new place two years back and bought a bunch of stuff, one of which was a new Dirt Devil 18v 'dustbuster.'  After a couple of months, she told me that it wasn't lasting long and I ran through the usual checklist of potential issues and sure enough...it self discharges within a week.

I can see NiMH type 14500 (AA) batteries stacked inside the cooling slots, but it's kaput, so there's nothing to lose.

It would be nice if I could buy one, as I don't see the pack listed on Royal's site, but what the hell...I don't like throwing semi-functioning stuff a way.

Check google.  There are several companies that make/sell replacement small appliance parts.  Also, check battery pack rebuilders.  One I've used is http://www.primecell.com.  They rebuilt a battery pack for a network tester with better batteries for about 2/3 the price of the manufacturer.  No connection, just a happy customer.

Also, Batteries Plus or Interstate Battery stores might be able to tack-weld some batteries together for you locally.

I easily took the back off with 4 Phillips screws.
There are two 18650 cells shrink wrapped together.
There is room for a third The circuit board is labeled 2-3 18650 cell input.
You could put 3 2900mah cells in there and get 4 hour rum time on high.
