I recently borrowed a friends MSS green summer bag and it was an amazing improvement over my 15 year old Target bag in comfort, weight, and packability. However, it was just a tad too short when using both bags together. I haven't been able to find an XL version and most people state that they are very rare. Anyone see an XL USGI sleep system lately?
If one can't be found, i'd like to start looking at alternatives. On Wiggy's site they have a two bag system in wide/long that is on sale that would run $280. Is there a lighter more packable system in a similar price range? Mostly summer and fall camping down to freezing, but I'd like a system that can stretch beyond. We have recently talked about doing some hiking and would like a system now that we could use if it develops into a major hobby. Down or synthetic is acceptable. For reference, I'm 6'5" 260 lbs athletic build. |

The NSN certainly exists for the xl bag but they are extremely rare. I'm convinced either there's a warehouse full of them that will eventually flood the market or they just were never made on large contracts and there's just damn few surviving examples.. the latter seems to be the current reality. I never saw one on AD and we had some damn tall dudes that musta hated their bags.
I'd go quality civi for the insulation bags and then see if you can stuff those in a $15 MSS bivy and be happy. Don't overlook some of the Nordic countries bags not commonly seen in US. I bought a Norwegian mountain bag (Bosnia 98) in a Norwegian PX (Sarajevo) that's by far the warmest bag I've ever slept in. They had plenty of XL bags on shelf since they tend to grow'em bigger in some of those parts. The Swedes, Finns, Norwegian....they know cold and they aren't runts. Start with ajungilak and go from there. It's my go to "cold as hell" bag |
