I try to never wash any of my waterproof stuff.  If I do its by hand in just water be it gortex and dry-plus or whichever stuff I am using.  Seems to stay waterproof longer, in terms of years.

As far as camp fire smells goes, good luck.  I have an AGO waterfowl jacket that I used on my last hunting trip in the Rockies and dried it out over a camp fire...  It really absorbed the smell.  I put it outside for a few hours on nice days and it helped to air it out...  I then left it hanging on the door to my man cave for a couple weeks and it got better, but if you put your face to it, it still smells like smoke.  Oh well I guess

Whatever you do, don't wash any of the "membrane" stuff with regular detergent, screws up the pores.

DON'T wash it with a detergent with optical brighteners; read this list of detergents:http://www.armystudyguide.com/content/army_board_study_guide_topics/uniforms/laundry-detergents-for-use-with-the-acu-army-combat-uniform.shtml

Whether it has a Gore-Tex (or similar) membrane or not, go to McNett or Nikwax sites, and read up on the appropriate detergent and the appropriate water repellant treatment.  Both companies make good products, and they can often be found on amazon.com and the usual outdoor equipment vendors.

I wash my softshells and hardshells once per winter, using a sport wash intended for the purpose that I buy at REI. These garments should be kept clean in order to maintain their water resistance and permeability. E.g., dirty GoreTex won't breathe well because the pores that are supposed to let out water vapor are clogged.
