Found the Eton ZoneGuard weather radio with "SAME" technology for $7.96 (plus $5 shipping) at Amazon
I have a scanner with weather band reception but not with the Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) technology that filters things down for your area. I live east of Los Angeles and hopefully the "specific area" is very specific. Within 30 minutes of where I live I could be in the mountains (snow storms), desert (flash floods), or on the ocean (rough seas). I live in Riverside county and it's seven thousand square miles in size running all the way to the AZ border. Does anybody know how "specific" the specific areas are for their warnings? Hopefully I can get my ZIP code rather than my county. |

SAME codes are county codes. Most of the SAME alert radios will allow you to enter multiple counties. There is no hazard distinction for less than a county, nothing to do with the radio.
Here is the list of codes: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm If you'd happen to be right on a coastline there are some codes for Marine hazards, but that might not get your other applicable notifications. |

I've got Reecom's also, I really like them for a few reasons:
They turn audio off at the end of a watch or warning announcement Battery life on backup is very good Selectable warning types, ie, you can turn off amber alerts or other notifications you don't want to hear |

related: is there an app for iphone/android which provides essentially the same function as a WX radio w/ SAME? ar-jedi Check with your local county/city police or emergency services. Our county has an alert system you can sign up for that sends text messages for emergencies (weather, government closings, etc.). Not an app, just a text alert, and there are some choices as to what you want to be notified about. |

The downside: last weekend we had a couple of days of heavy rain/thunderstorms/flash flooding in the area. Between the weather radio and both my and my wife's phones going off all night, it was pretty hard to get any sleep. But I guess that's kinda the point. |

I get warnings that apply to opposite ends on the county that the cell tower that my phone is using is located. AKA shit I don't care about but I do like the idea. |

The radio arrived today. It's pretty nice - Weather/AM/FM and the alert feature. AC adapter and it can run on three AA batteries.
The radio directed me to a NOAA web site to look up a code. Turns out there are five different SAME areas in my county so I ought to be hearing about thunderstorms and not snow-in conditions. http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm |
