It's piezoelectric. There's a button you push that charges a crystal inside and gives it some power, gotta press it to avoid the image from fading out. But if there's an IR illuminator on it, it's going to require batteries to power it.
These are apparently 1st generation NODs, which means the picture's going to be rather crappy. ETA: Have you contacted the manufacturer for a manual or other information? [email protected] |
| would something like this work with it? http://dx.com/p/ir-48-led-infrared-illumination-light-for-night-vision-dc-12v-500ma-15235 |

| i dunno about that it works pretty good for what i paid. when i go out on my porch i can see a few better than i thought. if it wasnt so dam cold i would go out in the woods and see how well it works with very little light.and i doubt the nv app would ever work. |

I think that's because, correct me if I'm wrong, you've never looked through NVG's before. I am especially talking about gen 3. |

So does a flashlight. I have something similar from Big 5 about 10 years ago. Not really worth the effort to use; sometimes my vision is better. |

no doubt gen 3 will work much much better, which i have never used.and for 70 bucks i didnt expect it to be top of the line. i plan on getting some ir chemlights or ir beacon so in a survival situation or whatever i can find certain spots in the dark .
for the money i paid its not to bad but if i paid full price i would be returning it. |

For the beacon i'd recommend a phoenix jr off ebay, for around $10. They work great.
But, that said, while you'll see the beacon flashing easily through your NV, it won't help with navigating over land to get to it if it's really dark out. Trying to find an IR illuminator that is somewhat decent would be a huge help to you. |

thanks for the info on the beacon im going to look them up now. i thought about getting a good ir illumininator but dont wanna spend much on one unless i upgrade to better n.v. mine comes with one but only works for maybe 10/15 feet
just ordered it for 10bucks and free shipping. |

Gen 1 NVGs are only going to work well in full moonlight or with an illuminator. For me, it's roughly the same as eyeballs once they are dark adapted (excluding illuminator use).
Gen 2 is useable, but Gen 3 is where you get real advances in distinguishing things in dark areas. ...I can fly with Gen 3s, but I ran into a garbage can with a Gen 1! |

I had a similar thing in the mid-90s, branded Night Owl but the lens was a Zenit. Set me back about $300 back then...today it's probably the same technology used in toy NVDs!
OP, is there a plastic bracket on the side, adjustable for pan and tilt, that looks like it would be perfect to hold a Mini Maglite? That's what mine had. It came with a plastic MML copy that had an IR lens on it, for the "illuminator". I would think you could rig up a MML with an IR lens (probably dirt cheap on eBay) for a makeshift illuminator to get more out of that little device. The primary operation of the device I had was a single, awkward, rubber-coated button, that (as a previous poster stated) engaged some sort of internal piezo crystal or something, to make the optics work. I believe the frame and construction was decent, however, as I recall it was metal (magnesium?), very light, and I dropped it many times with no ill effects. |
