Are you refering to an oil lamp? Can you post pictures of it? If it is an oil lamp, cut the wick as straight across as possible. Make sure the wick has soaked in the oil for at least 10 minutes. Start with the wick even with the top of the wick guide and light it. Put the chimney back on and only advance it enough to get good light. If you raise the wick and the flame increases and then decreases as you raise it then you don't have enough air flow to support a big flame. Keep your font full. Oil has weight that must be pulled up against gravity. The fuller it is the less height it has to lift the oil. Any decent lamp will burn the same wick at the same height for a week easy. |
| just a chinese dietz knockoff from wally world that I use camping. Seemed like the wick it came with lasted a long time. If I put oil in the lamp, then drain it, does the wich dry out and clog up while it is bieng stored? Should I plan on replacing the wick everytime I take it out of the closet? |

Worried about leaking? Drying it out shouldn't ruin a wick though. I'm just not quite sure you don't have it adjusted funny. Can you post pictures? |
