Have my eye on one of these, anybody own one or recommend something comparable?

ETA: Checked this out at local surplus store, very stiff and noisy, decided to replace the old M65 with a new Propper M65

An M-65, properly treated with Gore, McNett's or NikWax water-repellant treatment will probably be good for most showers or short-duration rains.

It is not waterproof, and will never be so.

I have a truspec one in MC. It's nice but they are fairly big and fairly thick. Because of that they have sort of a rain coat feel to them that the newer stuff doesnt. Not quite as loud with that paper sorta crinkle sound though. Id still probly take a gen 3 over the gen 2 though. My gen 3 goretex is ACU though so I end up wearing both depending on the time of year and weather conditions. Got it for 15 bucks so I cant complain about the color. Look at the gen 3's on ebay though. You can find the ACU ones pretty cheap.

What exactly are you looking for in the coat?  What will you be doing with it?

I really like my Alpha N-3B parka.  It's great for walking the dog or commuting to work on a frigid day.   http://www.amazon.com/Alpha-Industries-Mens-N-3B-Parka/dp/B002VWK5UU

There are lots of knock offs.  I would stick with Alpha brand.  The new Alpha N-3B had down as the insulator which is probably warmer but it's also more expensive.  http://www.alphaindustries.com/Mens-Flight-Jackets/Alpha-Industries-N-3B-Parka-with-Down.asp

Propper is have a super sale on their APCU line.  I just got some pieces and they are great.  They are very warm and technical, and more suited for hiking, camping, hunting, and shooting in the backcountry.  For really harsh conditions, I prefer layering systems like this.   http://www.epropper.com/

LL Bean all Season 3-in-1 Jacket:

LL Bean 3-in1

Tough, durable, warm, waterproof, versitile, quality made.  Doesn't scream tactical but practical.

I own Alpha M-65s (which I love and will never part with), but this is a better all-around jacket.   Hood is a huge bonus too.

Thanks for the advice, I'll look into it.

I love my goretex, although mine is woodland...and was free.
