Every year I help counsel our area 4-H Camps. Each counselor has to teach a class throughout the week to a group of kids who sign up for that class. I always try to teach a class that will encourage the kids to be active and not be attached to their phones, tv, and video games and to get out and enjoy the outdoors and live a healty lifestyle. This year I will be teaching a class on Hiking and Backpacking. I plan on going over basic map reading skills, first aid, and survival tips. Now, because these kids come from all classes of society, we are very limited to how much we can charge each kid (max of $5 per kid). My class will consist of 10 kids aged 12-15.
My question is, does anyone know a good place to get resources dirt cheap or free to give to the kids? I am looking for trail maps, compases, first aid kits, meals, and anything else that would be beneficial to share with the kids and give them to take home after camp. I have already sent a letter to the WV DNR as well as the Appalachian Trail Society. I just wanted to pick your brains in case you have any ideas on this. Thanks in advance everyone. |
