Anyone do this?
Are you using 70% or 91% Isopropyl? Any cautions? |
|
I use denatured alcohol.
All kinds of cautions. First alcohol, you can't see the flame which is a real hazard. Second, unless it is ethyl alcohol, like denatured, the noxious fumes are over powering in closed in environments like a small pack tent or boat cabin. Dentured, especially boat stove fuels, are pretty safe and not bad at all in those environments. Though I don't use my little pack alcohol stoves a lot, I use the heck out of my alcohol boat stove. These things work great really. Though they are simple as hell in design and structure, due to the alcohol, they do require a bit more thinking than other types of stoves. Heck, in a pinch, I used Vodka once. tj |

I run a alcohol stove for backpacking (mini trangia) and it does really great. As far as a multi fuel stove, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I normally use either DA, or the HEET that comes in a yellow bottle. The HEET has methanol in it I believe, so don't huff the stuff, or the fumes but for backpacking it does great.
Like TJ says, watch out for the flame, in sunlight you can't see it, and you can burn yourself bad if you get careless. Rubbing alcohol is really too watered down to do anything with, same with Vodka. Now if you live somewhere you can get the good Everclear that works really well as does moonshine |

Unless your particular stove is rated to burn alky, then assume it is not so rated. For example, my multi-fuel, NATO Optimus 199 (no longer offered) requires the tank to be completely drained, and an Alky jet (nozzle) to be installed prior to Alky use. YMMV. The folks saying that they used potable alky (booze) for fuel almost certainly regret doing so. Cut up the cheap furniture and such before burning perfectly good licquor, I say. YMMV. |

Interesting, can you use Grain alcohol / "Everclear"? I thinks it's 150 proof. Should burn better than Vodka. Yes you can use Everclear. It does have a distinct advantage in that you can burn it, drink it, and use it to disinfect wounds. Only real negative is that is very expensive. |

The water just doesn't burn and when you throw in the fact often its hard to tell whether an alcohol flame is out or not, it can be quite interesting. |

Are you using 70% or 91% Isopropyl? At least in the penny alcohol stoves, anything less concentrated than 91 percent Isopropyl is difficult to light, and doesn't burn with a clean flame. Denatured alcohol works very well, as does the yellow-bottle "Heet" fuel system dryer (which is mostly methyl alcohol). As previously mentioned Everclear is great, but MUCH more expensive than the other fuels. |
