I know 5.11 boots went through a total redesign a few years back.  When they were putting the original models on clearance, I bough two pair.  They were some of the poorest designs I've ever seen.  The holes for the laces were just punched through the leather, no grommets.  First time you pull hard on the laces, they tear the leather.  Soles were poorly glued to the uppers, etc.  Maybe the new ones are much better, but I'm no fan after those first ones.  They were OK in the comfort department, but wore like crap.  Save up and buy some Danners.

Danners of course but some Wolverines or Cabelas brand are pretty decent quality too.

The pair I bought seem to hold up well. Going on two years now and the only issue is the small velcro patch is starting to work loose. I wear these a lot , including riding motorcycle .  Overall they have held up well to daily use.

i bought my first pair about 6 months ago and i must say i am very happy with them. they are extremely comfortable and required no break in. With a good pair of wool socks they took me through elk season in Colorado down to the 0 degree area.

They are not advertised as water proof but i think they do a good job at keeping your feet dry. I can see that the Velcro tab will be the weak point but mine is still going strong for now. and to address what was said above, yes they now have

grommets for the laces and they are using YKK zippers. I say they are worth every bit of 100 bucks.

i have owned 5.11 boots for over 7 years and all of them had eyelets in the lace holes. sounds to me like you either got a pare of ripoffs or defects. im on pair 3 ATAC storms/shields and they have all held up great. we get a "boot allowance" every 2 years which is the only reason i have had 3 pairs. the last pair are still waterproof and fit great. the only problem is a small part of the sole has come lose, which would be an easy fix. my biggest complaint of 5.11 boots are the tread wares out a little fast. the pair i just replaced were almost smooth in the pressure spots. im sure i could have a new sole put on but for what i use them for they are fine. if they were such "poor design" i wouldnt have bought 3 pairs.

Worn them exclusively for the last 8 years on duty. We are issued pretty nice bellvues as often as we want, but I fork over the $100 about every 2 years for the 5.11's. They are light, comfortable and hold up reasonably well for being made offshore.

I actually ordered a pair 2 days ago. LAPolicegear gives you a free knife, some badass socks, and free shipping. Plus there is usually a 10-15% off code floating around, there is one on the site right meow

Then you don't have their original models.  Came in a Desert Marpat cordura, bought from LA PoliceGear, an authorized 5.11 dealer.  Why do you think they were totally redesigned as I noted above?  5.11 boots are fine when you want to wear a boot where a tennis shoe will do, just like ALL light "duty" boots.  You have noticed sole adhesion problems and premature wear and I guarantee you wear them 99% of the time in a car or on the pavement.  Take a 5.11 through high desert scrub and see what happens.

I wear the 5.11 HRT Urban boots. They've held up well against all abuses I've put them through. They are also pretty damn waterproof. I've gone fishing in them plenty of times and stood ankle-shin high in water and been completely dry.

a +1 to buy from LApolicegear. All sorts of free goodies. The 5.11 socks are quite nice as well, although they aren't wool.

I've had the ATAC 6", ATAC Storm and HRT Urban and been very pleased with the comfort and durability. I can get about 2 yrs of duty use out of a pair and they still have some life in them when I replace them.

seems to me you are alone with having problems with your boots as everyone else that has posted has nothing but good to say about them. as for my wear, no, tennis shoes wont work since you ASSume what others do. im a paid fire fighter medic and will gurantee my boots are not "99% in a car or on the pavement". i dont consider 2-3 years of 12-14 hour days of tromping through the woods and even fighting woods fires as well as PT as well as everything else i do in a days time "light duty". only one pare had the issue of the sole coming lose and could have easily been fixed but i was already due for my boot allowance. i would hate to guess how many steps i take in a days time. so again, i dont consider it "premature ware". there is a reason i and so many others continue to buy them time after time, because they are damn good boots.
