So i know a little about electrical, enough to know that I need to know more. And enough to know that messing around without being sure can release the magic smoke, burnt platic smell and molten copper.

A few guys i camp with just bought this:
Champion Generator
It handles 240 volt at 15 amps per 120 circuit. and a switch that enables a 30 amp RV recepticle.

I have a:
Briggs and Stratton Storm Responder
Where i have my camp using the 240 volt twist lock split out and applicances divided equally. No actual 240 volt appliances.

I am trying to understand the magic of the switch on the Champion, that uses both 15 amp breakers from the separate windings, to make a 120 volt 30 amp Rv receptical.
Also could a pigtail be made to accomplish this with my generator for when i need to run a RV plug on it, in the same manner as the above generator.

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

I have the Champion and it doesn't have the balls to crank my Campbell-Hausfeld pancake nailgun compressor.

I'd get something bigger, IMHO.

I'm shopping now for it's replacement.

No you can't create a 120v 30 amp circuit without rewiring your generator.

http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/default.aspx?filename=immvBH25QOkl-79DteBc

On page 2 it shows the "power" windings of the generator. They are wired in series like two 1.5 volt D-Cell batteries powering a 3 volt bulb. 120 + 120 = your 240.

You would have to wire the windings in parallel, and add the correct breaker. You would then loose your 240 volt option, unless you wired in a switch to accomplish this.

Mp0117 I do not have the Champion i was trying to find out how to accompish this with my current generator. What model do you have? Friends of mine own 3 of the model i linked and they are able to run their campers with no issues AC, water heater, etc. This started my interest to understand how.

PARover this is what i was understanding also. Would it be possible to not modify my generator. But make and external adapter that plugs in  and uses both windings and breakers to accompish this? Looking at the wiring diagram for the champion it looks like all the switch does is connect both of the hot leads. I guess if this was possible someone would sell a product to do it.

No, because the windings are hard wired in your genset. The switch on the champion, depending on the switch position, has the windings in series (240), or parallel (120 30a).

You would have to modify your genset permanently, or add a switch and wiring to it for the option.

So we are talking about at 33 on the wiring diagram where the red and black are the same  white netural?

Yes.

With all the original extra wiring, breakers, etc removed - Blk/Blue, and Red/Grey out of the windings would need to be wired together and then properly run through a breaker. one of the pair would then need to be connected to ground for your neutral.

I understand now. Looking at the champion wiring i see how this works, although i wont be uindertaking this project.

I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

Modify at your own risk

If you do modify it make sure you video tape it and say "watch this" before you turn it on.

Seriously, no problem, my pleasure.

Ha
step 1 press record
step 2 say hold my beer and watch this.
step 3 smoke and flames or, lights and magic all depends.

It is rare i run a RV, my camp is already set up so. I wont do this.

I am considering buying the Champion model listed for that rare occasion and as a backup.
I may wait and see how my friends samples weather.
No major hours on them yet. So far we only had to clean the carbeurator on one, this could be trash from a gas can or where ever. End of hunting season should tell more. Most of them must run all night for medical equipment CPAP machines.
