I have been reading many of the posts here and decided to start doing some preps.  I have lots of gear from my climbing days and thought I would get it out and use some of it.  Some of the Nalgene bottles have become like glass.  The ones marked HDPE have a sour smell and turned light yellow.  Is this normal ?  Should I keep any of  these ?  The ones marked PP seem OK, I am not sure about the ones marked PC. I don't want to find out latter they was not good.

If it's going to fail when you might need it most, I would throw them away and get new.

HDPE = High Density Polyethylene  These are the ones you say have gone brittle, then toss them.  If the lids still appear good keep the lids.  I lost a lid to one of mine and a replacement is not listed on Nalgene.com

PP = Polypropylene (my best guess)  If these look and act OK then they probably are OK.

PC = Polycarbonate  DO NOT TOSS THESE  If you do not want/trust these then IM me.  These are probably still good.
Hope this helps

All of the above.  Those containers have been around for a while since they predate the plastic recycling symbols.

With the condition of those HDPE ones I would just pitch or recycle them.  Nalgene only sells polycarbonate as labware now, not for consumer use after the whole "BPA" media enviroscare fantasy.  They'll last a long time if not in sunlight a lot.

For future info... Store them with the lids off

It does help, Thanks.
Keeping the lids is a good tip.

The containers are from the late 80's to early 90's.
I am keeping the PC marked ones and tossing the rest.

I have a PC marked one I bought on sale many years ago(5 or 6), it rides with me every day either in Iraq of Afghan, I clean it with a little bleach water every now and then, its still good and I plan on it being good for a lot longer.

Get rid of them all, OR be very willing to spend several hours cleaning your gear that they leaked all over.
I just tossed a pile just like that, after I spent $20.00 at the laundry cleaning everything in my checked bag.

There is no real problem with any BPA made bottles except do not (with water in them) microwave them, heat them, leave them on your dash in summer, or use them for long term storage. Certain idiots were doing this and it created harmful gasses into the water and air. Don't heat them up. ANY plastic would do that.
