I got in two of the Swiss Volcano stoves from Sportsman's Guide. Both were new and dated '76. They are supposed to be used with heat tabs or small sticks to boil water. Here is how it comes from SG.
I figured I'd cut the bottom out of one stove just big enough to where a Swedish alcohol burner from a Swedish mess kit/stove burner set would fit when you set the stove on top. Worked great! I had a extra burner. The cup that comes with it holds a pint and the corked bottle a quart. It all weighs 14 oz empty not counting the burner. I tested it out by heating the cup and bottle full of water. I had a honest full rolling boil in the cup in 4 min and in the bottle in 10. Not too shabby. That Swede burner was the perfect alternate heat source. I left the other stove alone. I figure just sitting the open bottom stove on a bed of small bed of coals then feeding it would be preferred if you just have to use wood. I use HEET in the yellow bottle for fuel but you can also use DA. If I was to use it in the field I would dig-in the burner to minimize tipping. I am very pleased with the stove's performance. If you can't see the pics they can be viewed here: http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=170&p=816079#p816079 |

Great. Another stove....
Make a Pepsi can burner to save on weight. Weight is not a consideration plus the stove can be set on top of the Swede burner. My pop can stoves do not work as well for that task. You sort of have to drop them into the stove other than one of my V-8 can vortex stoves and it's a bit too tall. Pop can burners have their place but not with this particular stove. One thing about it the Swede burner will be around long after pop can burners give up the ghost. Worth the extra weight. |

I did the same mod with mine years ago. My burner got so hot that it melted the aluminum windshield/bottle holder. Be careful! Mine melted to the point that it tipped over. From what I have read as long as the cup or bottle is in the stove like they should be there were no problems with the mod. There were melting issues with the mod when folks tried to set a pot on top of the stove as the top vent holes ended up acting as a side burner instead of just vents and it would get soft. Those Swede burners really hump. It is also important that the hole in the bottom only be made big enough for the Swede burner's tower. The more metal left the better. I messed with it today (just using the cup) and did a few boils with no issues. That said I removed the stove from the burner as soon as a boil was reached. Like you say it should be watched just to be safe. According to some folks even the fuel tabs can burn a hole in the side of it. The side metal is pretty thin compaired to the bottom. |

I've seen them used with the Swedish stoves placed in the bottom, guess it would be more user friendly to have a way to quickly remove it.....
I need to find a Swedish stove, not sure If I want to mod my Swiss stove or not though, as I may use it with other fuels.... |

If you just cut where the depression is on the bottom is it leaves plenty of metal around the hole. I figured if it did not work out I have a extra one anyway. If you did the mod I would think a round piece of metal cut so it covers the bottom would work for using wood or tabs but not so much jell. EBay has the Swede burners by their self at times. It seemed Sportsman guide set extra burners/stoves with their mess kit deals. Heck four of the complete sets they sent me were NIW. |

Also like you said if you wanted to use wood you could just cut a round piece of metal and drop it in for a bottom.... hrmmm
I seen where Sportsmansguide has the whole Swedish kits for $18 bucks, may be worth it just to get the little stove... I also found just the burners on Amazon for 15 bucks, it is the spirit burner though, isn't that smaller than the mil burner? |

That's about the only way I figured you could use one. Is your pop-can burner a side or a top burner? If you have a better way than what I did please share as it would be relevant to my interests and I have a extra stove. |

Yep, fill it up, and carefully drop it in, I guess you could place it in and fill it with a funnel if you wanted too. My little stove will burn for about 10min on a load of HEET, and will boil the water in the Swiss stove in about 7min. I made a small snuffer out of a can bottom, and added a peice of wire, so i could drop it down in and snuff it out if i needed. It's not burning of course, just a few demo pics to give you the idea http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/joe7170/100_0641.jpg http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/joe7170/100_0642.jpg http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/joe7170/100_0643.jpg That's about what I figured. Till something happens I'll stick with the Swede burner/cut stove but it's always good to have other options. Thanks. |

Similar to what was posted above concerning the original bags used for carrying these stoves, SG has them. UPS just dropped off my 2 pk of the "New Swiss Military Messenger Bag, Salt & Pepper" ($13.47 for 2pk) - Stove fits perfectly. Material is heavy duty, and looks brand new, although one of the bags has 1969 stamped in ink on the inside of the flap. Strap that comes with the bag has heavy duty spring loaded clips, and three different attachment points on back of bag makes it easy for carry, or attaching to gear if you really feel the need to do it. Bag Link (Site is down for maintenance, happened right after I posted link) |
