I use an ALICE for this purpose. And I have a frame for it, I found it FAR more comfortable to carry with the frame than as a softpack. |

I have 2 frames, 2 mediums, 2 larges, and 4 sets of should straps. If you plan on humping it, go with the frame, if it's just a container that you MIGHT have to carry, that's different. |

Unless the Med ALICE is very lightly loaded, there is no question that using a frame is a very good idea.
The Lg ALICE MUST be used with a frame. All this being so, why use an ALICE pack at all if it's going to be a car emergency kit? Just use some plastic, sealable totes in the trunk or other low-visibility location and be done with it. Then attach a frame––hopefully with MOLLE upgrades, and use the pack for its' intended purpose. If you have scads of ALICE packs lying around, and don't want to sell/trade them for something better, all well and good. If you don't have the room for a fully-loaded ALICE/frame ensemble, then get rid of it and buy a better pack that occupies less space, but will get the job done. |
