Not sure what you consider too much, but Filson is always a good choice.

Might as well have the best.

Damn hard choice.... UA Coldgear or Smartwool baselayers. I have to go with the Smartwool. It is so soft and warm. Do not get me wrong, I own several sets of Coldgear, I love Under Armour products, just I like the Smartwool better.

Ive placed an order with Botach roughly once a month for the last 4 years, they have yet to dissappoint.  The woolrich wool base layer run a little large, nothing the dryer wont fix.

Under Armour Cold gear shirts suck big time your better off with the cheap walmart long johns then them. Last time it snowed by me I had gone out with my UA shirt with a long sleeve on top and a sweatshirt and I was cold. Went back inside replaced the UA shirt with on a cheap walmart long john shirt same long sleeve and sweatshirt and was a lot warmer after that.

Lucky the SOB's still owe me $120 for a flashlight I payed for but they never sent me from 2008 tried to go through the BBB and at the end of it the BBB told me I'd have to go to small claims to get my money from botach. BBB said they where in the wrong and give me the report they made up if I wanted to go to small claims.

I have thought for a long time that wool, as an insulator, has been very much over-rated in comparison to modern, artificial fibers.

There are those who detest the feel of wool, and those who love it.  To each their own.

As for wool itself, it is only as good as the original lanolin (animal oil) as it carries.  Most modern manufacturing processes remove most, if not all of the lanolin, and we are left with a natural fiber that would cause most sheep to freeze to death if they were forced to wear such.  The myth about 'wool is as warm wet as dry" is based on the original lanolin shedding the water, not on the wool itself.

I have very good wool garments, both hand-made from natural sheep's wool, and manufactured from high-quality wool.  None of them is as good, from a survival point of view as a decent fleece garment.

YMMV.

Well, I dunno about that, but there are some who claim that one can re-introduce lanolin into wool from which the natural lanolin has been removed.

Unless you have a well-made wool garment already in-hand, such a process seems to me to be a hassle.  Better to avoid wool altogether, and obtain more modern garments that serve better and demand less maintenance.  Did I mention moths?

Like I said, I have some wool stuff that ranges from "natural hand-made" to excellent mfd stuff.   Some of it going on 60+ years old. Speaking purely from the practical/affordable angle I'd go good quality synthetic fleece for undergarments any day.
