I am looking for a GPS for hunting, camping and hiking. I prefer one that has a touch screen and has topographical information. I think there is a difference on the compass where one type you have to be moving, I don't want that type.
So, if y'all could give me your opinions on the Hand Held GPS units you have or have used, I would appreciate it. Thanks, |

I have one of the Delorme GPS's...and I love it. It's does everything a high priced Garmin goes, for a lot less. I have one of the entry level models, and it's a really nice gps. It also comes with a bunch of great software....Garmin will charge $100+ for the topo map software...Delorme gives it to you free. I couldn't be happier with mine.....topo maps, all color, geocaching compatible, turn by turn driving directions, free satellite imagery downloads......LOTS more stuff that what you would get for spending the dame money on one of the upper end Garmin handheald GPS's.

Get the Garmin 60 CSX.
I got the 60 CS the week it came out. Went camping in So. Utah and left it on a rock while doing some shooting. Went back and got it a week later and worked flawlessly. Gave it to my brother when I upgraded to the 60 CSX and he has beat the crap out of it and it still keeps on ticking. I have tried out several models and actually use mine tons. (geocaching). This is what you want. |

Does the Delorme and the Garmin 60 CSX have topography (elevation)? Also what about compass readings? Do you have to be moving or will they give it standing still? Thanks y'all, this is exactly the information I was hoping to gather. GPS File Depot Free topos to download by state for your handheld. I bought the Garmin 60 CSx on a Cabelas closeout deal and love it. It shows elevation. Can't comment on the compass use. I mainly use mine for geocaching adn the occasional hike (marking where the car is at, final destination). DO NOT SPEND THE MONEY ON GARMIN'S TOPO MAPS. Free is better. |

Mine is a Magellan Triton 500. Compass works when stationary, better when moving a little. Has topo maps/altimeter/barometer, etc. 2 AAs run it all day +.
not touch screeen though. (thanks for the map link. maps are costly!) Regards, Eric edit to correct brand! I must be getting early mad cow! |

Thanks y'all, this is exactly the information I was hoping to gather. I know the Delorme has topo maps build it....and a big software package that also lets you map out routes, and download new maps into the GPS. I have Garmin Etrex for several years, and I can honestly say that the Delorme is built just as rugged. |

The Garmin has info from whatever maps you put in, and there is a tremendous number of maps available for Garmin both free and paid. The ubiquity and variety of maps for Garmins is one of the biggest advantages of the brand.
Agree with previous posters that the 60 series is the workhorse and king of outdoor GPS receivers. The new 62 series looks very interesting as well. My only real complaint about either is I wish they had a battery system that could be set up to use rechargeable lithium cells. The 60CSx has the built in electronic compass which is what you seem to be looking for as well as a barometer/altimeter. It can be handy but isn't a true substitute for a plain ole compass. Touch screen is overrated for an outdoor use GPS. If you want something dual-use for driving and light outdoor use then touch screen is a lot more useful. |
