There was a thread a while back about a guy making custom boonie hats. I have looked but I can not find it. Can someone point me in the right direction? I am pretty sure that it was on the Survival forum.

Thanks,
Alan

Disregard, I found it on another forum.

Taken from Lightfighter...

I thought I would share some interesting features that I recently found on a new boonie hat design. Now I know it's "just" a hat, and won't save anyone's life, nor get them killed. However, take a look and see what you think. I took a chance and ordered a couple on a whim, because the maker stated he could do most anything custom, and I wanted a large 3" brim, my buddy wanted a small REECE style 1.5" brim (featured). This was produced by a custom maker who's information I will post soon (I have it at home and am posting this from work). He can build them to most any specification...size, color, material, brim size, ect. The best part may be that these cost about $25 shipped. Anyway, now for some of the features:

The interior has a blaze red/orange panel, for emergency signaling. I have seen these before on hats, but this is a first (for me) featured on a multicam boonie.

At the rear, there is a shock-cord adjustment...this will allow you to put a little tension on your head for those windy days. It also allows a bit of size adjustment.

There are two opposing vents, which allow a bit of heat to escape from the inside of the cap (great for those hot Texas days).

An on the inside, the is a small mesh fabric, which will prevent bugs from sneaking into the vents and getting on your head.

Overall, I am impressed. The quality is good, the make followed my specifications closely, IT FITS, and the features are unique. This boonie may not be for everyone, but I can appreciate the useable designs built into this cap.

CONTACT INFORMATION
The maker is Dave and he can be reached via:
[email protected]

The above was the first post...sort of a review.  The following is a post from the guy who is making the hats.

LF's, thanks for all the responses and interest.
I will try and answer common questions.

I can make this hat in any fabric AS long as I have it or can get it.

There is a 1-2 day turn around time from the time I receive the order make the hat and send it back. I use Crye Precision Multicam rip stop fabric for this boonie. I do have some of the MC twill fabric if someone wanted a hat in that fabric weight.

I can make any width brim.

I can accept paypal or money orders for payment. I won't speak about price since this forum belongs to LF.

A custom made "south african style paratrooper jacket" will be available in Multicam soon.

I do not have a website redone as yet hopefully soon.

Lastly, I am a disabled veteran owned business and I really appreciate the interest and orders from readers. Its nice to know that given the economic condition of our country, some folks still buy USA!!

Again, I thank you for your interest.

Dave

email me at: [email protected] for other questions you may have.

Hope this helps.  I've never done business with the guy but I hope to be ordering one in a couple weeks.

Hey guys;
Have been laid up in a Veterans Affairs hospital for a bit.  Now out, if you have questions about the hat as shown in this thread let me know.   Will be making several other limited custom garments soon as well.

I hope this guy is OK I know he mentioned something about the VA. I sent him a e-mail a while back about purchasing a hat, and I haven't heard anything from him.

Hope your OK!

Yes, I got out of the VA on Jan 8th with a clean bill of health, just some lingering issues from Vietnam.

FYI; at present I stock Multicam ripstop fabric; Marpat twill; OD twill; Coyote twill; Brown twill.     Some limited flectarn and austrian as well.   Thanks guys for the interest.   I hope to be offering some garments soon as I get patterns worked out.

In answer to several threads.    I do not always have time to answer every email inquiry or forum thread, as the time is spent making hats.   I am a one man shop and I make each hat individually.

There may be more pictures on the Lightfighter Forum.    In the sub forum that is named "Stud Forum" the topic is "Interesting Features on a new Boonie Hat" are several pic's as well as 5 or more pages of commentary.

I probably visit this forum the least.

I presently stock;  Multicam ripstop fabric by the roll;  I also have Marpat and Desert Marpat twill; ABU; CADPAT; OD. Brown and a light coyote twill.

Thanks to those of you who have ordered.  I have another shipment of hats going out on saturday.

To those of you that have asked about the "jackets".     I am presently patterning a South African paratroop jacket that will be produced in Multicam as well as other patterns.    I amalso working on a pattern for the USMC paramarine jacket as well as the smock that was used in WW2 for a limited time.

I got a british boonie when I was working with them in Iraq, they have them tailored down to look a lot like that, love mine.  the smaller brim let's you wear it in a more comfortable way.  If he can replicate this hat in multicam I'll buy one, and probably have many a customer in my group for him.  I'll buy a coyote one too if they come out right

love this hat

Does anyone have any further pics of these custom boonies?  I think I'm going to send out a mail on this but would LOVE to see a couple of other covers before jumping.  Help?
